- The Forest, Environment and Climate Change (FE&CC) Department of Odisha issued a notification exercising powers under Section 35(4) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
- Similipal is divided into two divisions: the Similipal South Wildlife Division, which comprises seven ranges including Pithabata North, Nawana South, Jenabil, among others, and the Similipal North Wildlife Division, which includes four ranges such as Barrehipani, Chahala, Nawan North, and Talabandh wildlife ranges. The name ‘Similipal’ is derived from the ‘Simul’ (Silk Cotton) tree, which is abundantly found in the region.

(i) Similipal hosts rich biodiversity, with more than 360 species of birds, 55 species of mammals including leopards and sambar, 62 species of reptiles, and 21 species of amphibians. It is notably home to around 40 wild tigers, including the world's only population of wild melanistic (black) tigers, and serves as a natural habitat for 25% of Odisha’s elephant population.
(ii) The Similipal landscape spreads over 2,750 square kilometers, with approximately 2,306 square kilometers forming the Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS). This vast and ecologically significant area plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation and habitat protection within the state.
(iii) In 2007, the Odisha government notified 1,194.75 square kilometers of the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) as the core critical tiger habitat. Odisha Joins as 34th State to Roll Out Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Scheme.
In April 2025, the Government of Odisha, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), launched three major health schemes—Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana, and Ayushman Vaya Vandana Yojana—during a grand event held in Cuttack, Odisha.
- The event was graced by the presence of several prominent leaders including Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda (MoHFW), Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister Jual Oram (Ministry of Tribal Affairs), and Mukesh Mahaling, Odisha’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare, along with other dignitaries.

IOC Announces ₹61,077 Crore Investment for Petrochemical Complex in Odisha.
In April 2025, New Delhi (Delhi)-based Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government to establish a world-class petrochemical complex at Paradip, Odisha, with an investment of ₹61,077 crore.
- The MoU was formalized during the Odisha Investors' Meet in New Delhi, making it IOC’s largest-ever single-location investment.
- The proposed petrochemical facility will feature a dual-feed cracker unit along with downstream plants to manufacture key chemicals such as Phenol, Polypropylene (PP), and Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)—all crucial for India's industrial and manufacturing sectors.
i. Petronet LNG Limited (PLL), headquartered in New Delhi and recognized as India’s largest importer of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), will invest ₹6,500 crore to set up an LNG import terminal at Gopalpur port, Odisha.

Indian Army’s White Tiger Division Conducts Air Defence Exercise with OSA-AK-9K33 Missiles in Odisha.
In March 2025, the Indian Army’s (IA’s) White Tiger Division, under the Southern Command, successfully conducted a live air defence missile firing drill using the OSA-AK (9K33) missile system at the Gopalpur Seawards Firing Ranges, Odisha.
- The exercise demonstrated the operational readiness of the Army Air Defence (AAD) and achieved 100% accuracy against Maneuverable Expendable Aerial Targets (MEAT).
- The drill was organized by the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, based in Pune, Maharashtra, to enhance combat preparedness and test capabilities in modern warfare scenarios.

(i) The OSA-AK (9K33) missile system, also known by its NATO designation SA-8 Gecko, is a low-altitude, short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Soviet Union and inducted in 1972. It features a length of 9.14 meters, width of 2.75 meters, weight of 17.5 tonnes, and can engage targets up to a maximum range of 12 kilometers, making it highly effective for short-range aerial defense.

Paradip Port Retains Top Position in Cargo Handling Among Major Ports in FY25.
According to provisional estimates released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA), Odisha-based Paradip Port Authority (PPA), formerly known as Paradip Port Trust, has retained its position as the top cargo-handling major port in India for the Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).
PPA handled 150.41 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of cargo, marking a 3.5% increase compared to 145.4 MMT handled in FY24. With this, it has joined the exclusive 150 MMT club among Indian ports.
It was closely followed by Deendayal Port (Kandla, Gujarat), which witnessed a 13% increase, handling 150.15 MMT of cargo in FY25, up from 132 MMT in FY24. Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, recorded 7.4% growth, reaching 86 MMT cargo volume in FY25.

(i) Overall, the data shows that most of the 12 major Indian ports recorded cargo traffic growth of 4.35%, reaching a total of 855 MMT in FY25, compared to 819.30 MMT in FY24.

SBI Research Report Finds Increased Mudra Loan Availment by MSMEs in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and North-Eastern States.
Recently in April 2025, the State Bank of India (SBI) released a report titled "The PMMY: A Decade of Audacious Dreams: Bolder Bigger and Indeed Beautiful" to mark ten years of the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY). The report revealed that the share of MUDRA (Micro Units Development and Refinancing Agency) loans in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and the North-East has grown significantly, reflecting a more inclusive and balanced credit distribution pattern across India.
- Out of the total 52 crore MUDRA accounts opened over the past decade, Shishu loans account for 78%, Kishor for 20%, and Tarun/Tarun Plus for 2%.
- The share of Shishu loans has decreased from 93% in FY16 to 51.7% in FY25, while Kishor loans have grown from 5.9% in FY16 to 44.7% in FY25, indicating the expansion and formalization of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
- Bihar leads in the number of women entrepreneurs under PMMY with 4.2 crore beneficiaries, followed by Tamil Nadu with 4.0 crore and West Bengal with 3.7 crore. Maharashtra has the highest share of women account holders at 79%, followed by Jharkhand (75%) and West Bengal (73%).

(i) Overall, women constitute 68% of all PMMY account holders, showcasing the scheme’s strong impact on women’s empowerment at the grassroots level.
(ii) The share of PMMY loans has also grown significantly in states like Bihar (from 5.67% in FY16 to 10.97% in FY25), Uttar Pradesh (from 9.27% to 11.30%), and Odisha (from 4.24% to 4.51%).
(iii) Under PMMY, collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh are provided through Member Lending Institutions in four categories—Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishor (₹50,000–₹5 lakh), Tarun (₹5–10 lakh), and Tarun Plus (₹10–20 lakh).

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Launches 'Antyodaya Gruha Yojana' in Kalahandi.
Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi launched the "Antyodaya Gruha Yojana" in March 2025, a housing initiative aimed at improving the living conditions of underprivileged citizens and supporting the mission of "Housing for All."
- The scheme will spend Rs 7,550 crore over three years to construct over 5 lakh houses for eligible households in the state.
- Each beneficiary will receive Rs 1.20 lakh for constructing pucca (permanent) houses, ensuring better living standards.
- Under the scheme, beneficiaries will also receive key services such as toilets (Swachh Bharat Mission), LPG connections (PMUY), clean drinking water (JJM), and electricity (Saubhagya Yojana).

BU Researchers & ZSI Discover New Marine Parasitic Isopod Species 'Lobothorax bharati'.
In March 2025, researchers from the Department of Zoology, Berhampur University (BU) in Odisha, in collaboration with the Estuarine Biology Regional Centre (EBRC) of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Ganjam, discovered a new species of marine parasitic isopod.
- The species has been named Lobothorax bharati in honor of India, the homeland of the scientists behind the discovery.
- This tiny parasite, measuring less than 3 centimeters in length, was found along the coast at Gopalpur and Bahabalpur in the Ganjam and Balasore districts of Odisha, respectively.

(i) Researchers from Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University (MSCB University) in Baripada, Odisha, have discovered a new species of wild ginger in the Similipal Biosphere Reserve (SBR) located in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.

DRDO & Indian Navy Successfully Conduct Flight-Test of Indigenous VL-SRSAM.
In March 2025, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy (IN) successfully conducted the flight-test of the indigenously developed Vertically-Launched Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the Odisha coast.
- It was launched from a land-based vertical launcher against a high-speed aerial target at a very close range and low altitude, demonstrating its Near-Boundary-Low Altitude capability.
- In March 2025, DRDO and the Indian Navy successfully conducted a flight-test of the VL-SRSAM from ITR Chandipur, Odisha. The missile demonstrated its Near-Boundary-Low Altitude capability by engaging a high-speed aerial target with precision.
- The missile showcased high agility, accuracy, and reliability with a sharp turn rate to destroy the target. All weapon system elements, including the indigenous RF seeker, Multi-Function Radar (MFR), and Weapon Control System (WCS), performed as expected. Flight data was validated using ITR Chandipur’s range instruments.
Main Point :-
(i) VL-SRSAM is a next-generation SAM designed by DRDO's facilities, including DRDL and RCI in Hyderabad and R&DE in Pune. It is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a CPSE under the Ministry of Defence.
(ii) The missile is developed for the Indian Navy as a quick point defense against supersonic sea-skimming threats like aircraft and UAVs. It has a strike range of 50 km and can reach an elevation of 15 km.
(iii) VL-SRSAM weighs 170 kg, with a length of 3931 mm and a diameter of 178 mm. It features a smokeless propulsion system and advanced Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM) for enhanced combat effectiveness.

In March 2025, Ramakanta Rath, the renowned Odia poet and Padma Bhushan awardee, passed away at the age of 90 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Born on 13 December 1934 in Cuttack, he was a distinguished modernist poet and former civil servant.
- Rath joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1957 and held several significant positions, retiring as the Chief Secretary of Odisha in 1992.
- Known for his philosophical and modernist approach to Odia poetry, he explored themes of mysticism, existentialism, and the human condition.
- His notable works include "Kete Dinara" (1962), "Aneka Kothari" (1967), and "Sri Radha" (1984), the latter earning him the Saraswati Samman in 1992.

ZSI Scientists Discover New Soil Nematode Species 'Crassolabium dhritiae' in Odisha.
In March 2025, scientists from the Kolkata (West Bengal)-based Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered a new species of soil-dwelling nematode named ‘Crassolabium dhritiae’ in the Deccan Peninsula biogeographic zone located in Keonjhar, Odisha.
- The discovery, published online in Acta Zoologica Bulgarica, highlights the rich and often overlooked biodiversity of this region, emphasizing the ecological significance of nematodes in maintaining healthy soil ecosystems.
- The species is named ‘Crassolabium dhritiae’ in honor of Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, the Director of ZSI, recognizing her remarkable contributions to taxonomy and zoological research.
Main Point :-
(i) This nematode is characterized by a medium-sized slender body, rounded lip region, large odontostyle, long pharynx, and distinct features in the female reproductive system, along with a uniquely shaped tail.
(ii) Members of the Crassolabium genus display omnivorous and predatory behavior, although detailed research is ongoing to better understand their feeding habits.
(iii) With the addition of Crassolabium dhritiae, the global count of species in the Crassolabium genus rises to 39, including 9 species reported from India.

In February 2025, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers won their first-ever title in the Men's Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 by defeating Hyderabad Toofans 4-3 in the final. The championship match took place at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha. This victory marked a historic moment for the Bengal-based team in the tournament’s history.
- The 6th edition of the Men's HIL 2024-25 featured eight teams and was held from December 28, 2024, to February 1, 2025. In January 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Avaada Group partnered with Casale, a company fully owned by Casale Holding and headquartered in Lugano, Switzerland, to develop India's largest green ammonia plant in Gopalpur, Odisha.
- This project will support India's shift from fossil fuel-based ammonia production, aligning with the nation's net-zero emission goals.

DRDO Successfully Conducts Three Flight Trials of Indigenous VSHORADS off Odisha Coast.
On February 01, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three consecutive flight trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
- These tests were conducted against high-speed targets flying at very low altitudes.
Main Point :-
(i) During these tests, the surface-to-air missiles intercepted and completely destroyed targets with reduced thermal signatures, simulating low-flying drones in different flight conditions.
(ii) These flight tests were conducted in the final deployment configuration, where two field operators performed weapon readiness, target acquisition, and missile firing.

- The two-day event, held from January 28 to 29, 2025, brought together industry leaders, investors, and policymakers from over 16 countries, including partner countries Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia, to explore investment opportunities in Odisha.

- PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the two-day Utkarsh Odisha - Make in Odisha Conclave 2025 at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, held from January 28 to 29, 2025.
- Odisha received investments worth ₹16.73 lakh crore, covering 593 industrial projects across 20 sectors.

100 Odisha Villages to Receive Direct Funding for Forest Protection under CFR Plans Approved by Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MOTA).
In January 2025, the Project Appraisal Committee (PAC) under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MOTA) approved Community Forest Resource (CFR) plans for 100 villages in phase-I under the Forest Right (FRA) Act, 2006. This number is fewer than the Odisha government's proposal to implement it in 400 villages across the state.
- With this approval, 100 villages in Odisha will receive funds directly in the bank accounts of Gram Sabhas instead of Gram Panchayats for the first time, enabling them to carry out forest protection, management, and convergence works in their respective community lands.
- The state government will receive Rs 16 crore for the development and execution of CFR management plans for 100 villages, with priority given based on the availability of Minor Forest Produce (MFP), preparedness of the plans, community and gram sabha participation, and the establishment of Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
- Gram Sabhas of villages will be entrusted with the responsibility to carry out tree plantation and prepare need-based development plans.
Main Point :-
(i) Each village will receive Rs 15 lakh per annum, which will be directly deposited into the bank account of the respective gram sabha. Additionally, technical agencies will receive Rs 1 lakh for developing management plans.
(ii) CFR management plans have been proposed in various districts of the state: Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Dhenkanal, and Bargarh.
(iii) As per MoTA, Maharashtra topped among states in recognizing Community Forest Resource Rights (CFRR), with 8,661 villages granted titles as of November 2024, followed by Chhattisgarh (with 4,328 titles), and Odisha (with 3,659 titles).

In January 2025, Odisha Warriors won the first-ever Women's Hockey India League title by defeating JSW (Jindal South West) Soorma Hockey Club of Punjab and Haryana.

Odisha Becomes 34th State to Implement Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Scheme.
In January 2025, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Odisha, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Authority (NHA), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), to implement Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) in Odisha.
- This move made Odisha the 34th state in the country to implement Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Scheme.
- The MoU was signed by LS Changsan, Additional Secretary, MoHFW and CEO of NHA, and Aswasthy S, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Odisha, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi (Delhi).
Main Point :-
(i) AB PM-JAY will be implemented in convergence with the existing Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY) in Odisha.

Brijendra Pratap Singh Appointed as CMD of NALCO.
On January 10, 2025, Brijendra Pratap Singh was appointed as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of National Aluminium Company (NALCO), succeeding Sridhar Patra. He will be overseeing the corporate office of NALCO located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
- He served as the Director-In-Charge for Burnpur and Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), West Bengal, and was a member of the Board of Directors (BoD) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

PM Modi Launches ₹2 Lakh Crore Projects in AP, Odisha and Inaugurates Green Hydrogen Hub and Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention.
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Odisha from 8th January to 9th January 2025 to launch various projects worth over Rs 2 lakh crore, aimed at promoting sustainable development, industrial growth, and infrastructure enhancement. The key projects include:
- Laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple railway and road projects worth over Rs. 19,500 crore in AP.
- Launched the first Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in Pudimadaka, AP.
- Inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention and remotely flagged off the inaugural journey of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

On January 5, 2025, Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, inaugurated the Adivasi Mela 2025 at the Exhibition Grounds in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, ahead of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) event.
- During the event, he launched the Shahid Madho Singh Haath Kharcha Scheme, with a budget of Rs 156 crore, to support tribal students. He also honored nine tribal talents and ten tribal farmers for their exceptional contributions.
- A special edition of the journal Banja-2025, published by the Tribal Language and Culture Academy of Odisha, was also released during the event.
- The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8 to 10, 2025, in collaboration with the Odisha State Government.

(iii) The scheme offers a one-time incentive of Rs 5,000 per year to tribal students who pass Class 8 and advance to Class 9 or 10, as well as to those enrolling in Class 11. President Droupadi Murmu Appoints New Governors for Kerala, Odisha, Bihar, Mizoram, and Manipur.
On December 25, 2024, President of India, Droupadi Murmu, appointed new Governors for five states: Kerala, Odisha, Bihar, Mizoram, and Manipur, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
- All appointments will be effective from the dates the Governors assume charge of their respective offices.
- President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Raghubar Das as Governor of Odisha and appointed Hari Babu Kambhampati as the new Governor of Odisha.

(i) Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar was appointed as the new Governor of Kerala, replacing Arif Mohammed Khan.
(ii) In Odisha, Hari Babu Kambhampati took over from Raghubar Das. Arif Mohammed Khan was moved to Bihar, replacing Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. General (Dr.) V.K. Singh (Retired) was appointed as the new Governor of Mizoram, succeeding Hari Babu Kambhampati.

India to Host First-Ever World Athletics Continental Tour Event in August 2025.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has confirmed that India will host its first-ever World Athletics Continental Tour, a bronze level global meet, on August 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This will be the first time India hosts such a prestigious global event since organizing the 2004 World Half Marathon Championships in New Delhi.
- A bronze-level meet in the World Athletics Continental Tour is a mid-tier event where athletes compete for world ranking points (category C).
- The World Athletics Championships 2025 will be held from September 13 to 21, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan.

IIT Guwahati, IIT Mandi, and CSTEP Bengaluru Release District-Level Climate Risk Assessment Report
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, IIT Mandi, and the Centre for Study of Science, Technology, and Policy (CSTEP) Bengaluru released a comprehensive report titled "District-Level Climate Risk Assessment for India: Mapping Flood and Drought Risks Using IPCC Framework" on December 13, 2024. The report, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), provides a detailed analysis of district-level climate risks in India.
The report identifies 51 districts with very high flood risk and 118 districts with high flood risk, with vulnerable regions including Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Odisha, and Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, 91 districts face very high drought risk, with Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Maharashtra being the most affected. Alarmingly, 11 districts, including Patna (Bihar), Alappuzha (Kerala), and Kendrapara (Odisha), are highly vulnerable to both floods and droughts.
The report emphasizes the urgent need for tailored, region-specific adaptation strategies to enhance resilience and mitigate the impacts of climate change. It also highlights the importance of collective efforts and innovative frameworks to address climate challenges.

India's states have exhibited strong economic resilience post-COVID-19, with 25 states recording over 7% growth in their Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) during FY22 and FY23, as per the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) report. Among them, 17 states, including Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Odisha, achieved an impressive 9% growth rate. The report underscores the sectoral strengths contributing to India's economic growth, highlighting Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh as leaders in agricultural production. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha have leveraged their industrial and mineral wealth, while Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka excel in industrial and technological advancements. Union Minister S. Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister (CM) of Odisha, jointly launched the official website pbdindia.gov.in for the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in New Delhi (Delhi).
- The launch of the PBD website marks the start of online registration for the PBD Convention 2025. It will provide detailed information on the biennial event.
- The 18th PBD Convention will take place from 8th to 10th January 2025 in Bhubaneswar (Odisha) in partnership with the Government of Odisha.
- PBD Convention is a key event of the Government of India (GoI) to connect with the Indian Diaspora.

(i) The theme of PBD Convention for 2025 is "Diaspora's contribution to a Viksit Bharat".

DRDO Successfully Conducts Flight Trial of India's First Long-Range Hypersonic Missile.
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India successfully conducted the flight-trial of India's first long-range hypersonic missile off the coast of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.
- This missile can carry various payloads over 1,500 km, enhancing India's military range. It is developed by DRDO.
- A hypersonic missile travels at speeds above Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound), roughly a mile per second. Unlike ballistic missiles, they are highly maneuverable, making them difficult to detect and intercept.
- There are two main types: Hypersonic Glide Vehicles (HGVs), launched by rockets and gliding to the target, and Hypersonic Cruise Missiles (HCMs), powered by air-breathing scramjet engines.
Main Points:-
(i) It has been developed through extensive research in various DRDO laboratories, particularly at the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad, Telangana.
(ii) While Russia and China are leading in hypersonic missile development, the U.S. is also making progress in this field. Other countries like France, Germany, Japan, and Israel are also involved in hypersonic weapon development.

IREL and UKTMP to Establish Joint Venture for Titanium Slag Production in Odisha.
Mumbai (Maharashtra) based IREL (India) Limited (previously known as Indian Rare Earths Limited), and Kazakhstan based Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium and Magnesium Plant JSC (UKTMP) signed a Joint Venture (JV) to establish IREUK Titanium Limited for production of titanium slag (Ti Slag) in Odisha.
- The agreement was signed by Dr. Deependra Singh, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), IREL (India) Limited and Assem Mamutova, President UKTMP JSC in the presence of Dr. A.K. Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) & Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and Nurlan Zhalgasbayev (Ambassador of Kazakhstan).
Main Points:-
(i) This partnership aims to strengthen India's titanium value chain by converting low-grade ilmenite (Titanium oxide) into high-grade feedstock, also generating local employment opportunities.
(ii) UKTMP JSC will provide the technology of producing Ti Slag and will take the agreed quantities for an input in their Ti sponge plant.
(iii) IREL (India) Limited is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the DAE. It was incorporated on August 18, 1950, with its first unit Rare Earths Division (RED) in Aluva (Kerala).

DRDO Successfully Tests Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile off Odisha Coast.
On 12th November 2024, The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the first flight-test of the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM), with a range of 1,000 kilometers(km), from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha.
- This is a new variant of the Nirbhay LRLACM with improved features. It was launched from a mobile articulated launcher.
- The LRLACM was developed by Bengaluru(Karnataka)-based Aeronautical Development Establishment(ADE) with contributions from other DRDO laboratories and other industries.
Main Points:-
(i)On 11th November 2024, DRDO handed over the Authority Holding Sealed Particulars (AHSP) of P-7 Parachute System to the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) by the Agra (Uttar Pradesh-UP) based Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), a DRDO laboratory.
