Senior INC Leader KC Venugopal Reappointed as Chairperson of Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

In May 2025, senior Indian National Congress (INC) leader KC Venugopal was recently reappointed as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Parliament of India by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. His tenure will last until April 2026.


      - This reappointment follows the 1967 convention of selecting the PAC Chairperson from the principal opposition party in the Lok Sabha, ensuring non-partisan oversight of public finances.


      - KC Venugopal presently serves as the Chairperson of PAC and as General Secretary (Organisation) of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

      - His political experience includes serving as Rajya Sabha MP (2020–2024), Union MoS for Civil Aviation (2012–2014), MoS for Power (2011–2012), and as a Kerala MLA (1996–2009).

Friedrich Merz Sworn In as Germany’s 10th Chancellor.

On May 6, 2025, Joachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and a seasoned lawyer, was elected as the 10th Chancellor of Germany. He secured 325 votes out of 630 seats in the second round of voting in the Bundestag, crossing the required majority threshold.


      - In the first round of the secret ballot, Friedrich Merz fell short by six votes, receiving only 310 votes, while 316 votes were required for a simple majority to win the chancellorship.


      - Following his victory in the second round, the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, officially approved Friedrich Merz as the new Chancellor of Germany in a formal ceremony held at the Bundestag in Berlin.

      - Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which won the February 2025 election in alliance with the Social Democrats, formed a coalition with a combined strength of 328 seats in the Bundestag. Notably, Merz became the first Chancellor in Germany’s history to initially lose a Bundestag vote before securing the position in a subsequent round. He also holds the distinction of being the oldest individual to assume the office of Chancellor since Konrad Adenauer, Germany’s first post-war head of government.

Prakash Magdum Appointed as Managing Director of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

In May 2025, Prakash Magdum, a 1999-batch officer of the Indian Information Service (IIS), officially took charge as the Managing Director (MD) of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoI&B), Government of India (GoI).


      - Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, NFDC works towards promoting excellence in Indian cinema. Prakash Magdum succeeded Prithul Kumar, who previously held the post of MD.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Before this appointment, Prakash Magdum served as the Additional Director General (ADG) at the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He brings extensive experience in the field of media and film communication.

      (ii) He previously served as the Director of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), located in Pune, Maharashtra. During his tenure at NFAI, he led the National Film Heritage Mission, a major initiative aimed at preserving India's cinematic legacy.

(iii) In addition to his contributions at NFAI, Prakash Magdum also worked as the Registrar of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, further strengthening his involvement in India’s film education and archival sectors.

Togo Elects Jean-Lucien Savi de TovΓ© as First President Under New Parliamentary System.

In May 2025, the Parliament of Togo (Togolese Republic), a West African nation, unanimously elected Jean-Lucien Kwassi Lanyo Savi de TovΓ© as the country’s first President under its new parliamentary system. He was chosen by all 150 members present in the bicameral Parliament, which comprises a total of 174 seats across the National Assembly and the Senate, for a four-year ceremonial term.


      - This historic election follows a major constitutional reform enacted in May 2024, which transitioned Togo from a semi-presidential system to a parliamentary form of governance. The reform aimed to distribute political power more broadly and redefine the structure of executive leadership.


      - Jean-Lucien Savi de TovΓ© succeeded Faure GnassingbΓ©, who previously served as Togo’s long-time president. Under the new system, Faure GnassingbΓ© was sworn in as the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, a newly established role that now holds the highest executive authority in the country.

      - Jean-Lucien Savi de TovΓ© has had a long and influential political career. His public service began in 1967 when he was appointed Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a military coup. This marked his entry into national politics.

Main Point :-   (i) With the legalization of multiparty democracy in Togo, Savi de TovΓ© went on to found the Party of Democrats for Unity (PDU). In 1999, the PDU merged into the Pan-African Patriotic Convergence (CPP), where he served as first vice-president, continuing his commitment to democratic governance.

      (ii) From 2005 to 2007, he served as Minister of Trade, Industry, and Handicrafts, under the leadership of Prime Ministers Edem Kodjo and Vawovi Agboyibo. Later, in 2009, he was appointed as President of the Permanent Framework for Dialogue and Consultation (CPDC), further contributing to national policy dialogue and political reform.

(iii) Under the new parliamentary system, the President of the Republic holds a ceremonial role and is elected by Parliament for a renewable four-year term, while executive power rests with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, who is chosen from the majority party or coalition. The Chairman serves a six-year term, overseeing both domestic and international affairs. A 12-month transition period allowed the outgoing president to retain executive powers until the new system came into full effect.

FSIB Recommends Sanjay Joshi as Chairman and Managing Director of Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL).

In May 2025, the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB), operating under the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF), recommended Sanjay Joshi, a 1989-batch officer, for appointment as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL), headquartered in New Delhi, Delhi.


      - This recommendation comes after the retirement of R.R. Singh in February 2025. Following his retirement, Amit Misra, the Executive Director (ED) of OICL, was appointed as acting CMD for a three-month period starting March 1, 2025.


      - The appointment of Sanjay Joshi as CMD is now subject to approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If confirmed, he will serve as CMD until August 31, 2027, when he attains the age of 60.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Sanjay Joshi is currently serving as General Manager (GM) at United India Insurance Company Limited (UIICL), based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).

      (ii) He brings over 30 years of experience in the general insurance sector, having held roles such as Branch and Divisional Head in various regional offices, and a key role in the Large Corporate Cell (LCC) in Delhi.

Sanjay Jaiswal Named Head of CoE, Baijayant Panda Appointed Head of CoPU for FY26.

In May 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appointed Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the Chairperson of the Committee on Estimates (CoE) for the financial year 2025–26 (FY26). The appointment is part of the annual constitution of parliamentary committees.


      - The Committee on Estimates (CoE) is composed of 30 members, all from the Lok Sabha. Its term is effective from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026.


      - The primary role of this committee is to examine budget estimates, recommend measures for economy in public expenditure, and suggest improvements in administrative efficiency.

      - The CoE plays a critical role in parliamentary oversight by identifying potential savings in government spending and suggesting alternative policy approaches. It serves as a key mechanism to ensure transparency and accountability in budget utilization.

Main Point :-   (i) In the same announcement, Baijayant 'Jay' Panda, BJP MP from Kendrapara, Odisha, was reappointed as the Chairperson of the Committee on Public Undertakings (CoPU) for FY26. This marks the continuation of his leadership role in overseeing public sector enterprise performance.

      (ii) The CoPU consists of 22 members β€” 15 from the Lok Sabha and 7 from the Rajya Sabha β€” with its tenure also set from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026. This committee scrutinizes the reports and accounts of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and evaluates whether they are being run in alignment with sound business and commercial practices.

Anthony Albanese Re-elected as Australian Prime Minister for Second Consecutive 3-Year Term.

In May 2025, Anthony Norman Albanese, the incumbent Prime Minister (PM) of Australia and leader of the center-left Labor Party (LP), was re-elected in the federal elections, securing a second consecutive 3-year term. With this victory, he became the first Australian PM in two decades to achieve two back-to-back terms.


      - As per the estimates by the Australian Electoral Commission, Albanese’s Labor Party secured 70 seats, while the opposition conservative coalition led by Peter Dutton won only 24 seats in the 150-member House of Representatives, the lower house of the Australian Parliament.


      - Anthony Albanese began his political journey in 1979 by joining the Labor Party and was first elected to Parliament in 1996 as the Member for Grayndler (Sydney seat).

      - He has since been re-elected to the House of Representatives 9 times: 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

Salem Saleh Bin Braik Appointed as Yemen’s New Prime Minister.

In May 2025, the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) of Yemen appointed Finance Minister (FM) Salem Saleh Bin Braik as the new Prime Minister (PM) of Yemen. He succeeded Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, who resigned on May 3, 2025, after encountering several governance challenges, including being unable to implement a cabinet reshuffle.


      - Salem began his career working in customs at the Mukalla port in Yemen and later moved to the port's audit department, where he served until the 1990s.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) In 2005, Salem Saleh Bin Braik was appointed as the Director-General (DG) of Customs at the al-Tuwal/Haradh crossing in Hajjah Governorate. He later held the DG role at the Hodeidah port on the Red Sea and, in mid-2013, became the DG of Aden Free Zone Customs.

      (ii) From 2014 to 2018, he headed the Customs Authority. In 2019, he became a member of the Supreme Economic Committee of Yemen's internationally recognized government, later joining the Board of Directors (BoD) of the Central Bank of Yemen and serving as Deputy FM.

(iii) He was appointed as Yemen’s Finance Minister in 2019, holding this position until his elevation to Prime Minister in May 2025.

South Korea’s Acting President Han Duck-soo Steps Down from Office.

In May 2025, Han Duck-soo, the Acting President and Prime Minister (PM) of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), officially announced his resignation to run in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for June 3, 2025.


      - This election comes in the aftermath of the December 2024 impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office following widespread criticism over his controversial declaration of martial law.


      - Following Han Duck-soo’s resignation, Education Minister Lee Ju-ho assumed the role of acting president, marking the fourth leadership transition in South Korea since December 2024.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Han Duck-soo is a seasoned South Korean economist, diplomat, and politician, with a public service career spanning more than four decades.

      (ii) He previously served as Prime Minister from 2007 to 2008 under President Roh Moo-hyun, and again from 2022 to 2025 under President Yoon Suk Yeol. He also held the role of acting president during transitional periods.

(iii) In the upcoming election, he is expected to represent the People Power Party (PPP), South Korea’s main conservative political party, and will likely face strong competition from Lee Jae-myung, the current frontrunner and a prominent leader of the liberal Democratic Party (DP).

Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh Appointed as Director General and CEO of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA).

In May 2025, Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh, a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Post & Telecommunication Accounts and Finance Service (IP&TAFS), was recently appointed as the Director General (DG) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), a think tank under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).


      - This marks Singh’s second tenure at IICA, as he had earlier served in the same role during 2017–2018. He replaces Dr. Ajay Bhushan Prasad Pandey, a retired IAS officer, who was handling the additional charge of the institute since April 2024.


      - Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh has over 30 years of experience in finance, corporate law, governance, and public policy. He has served in key roles such as Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and CEO of the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA).

     

Main Point :-   (i) Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh has also been a Member of the Governing Body of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) and served as Member Secretary of the Insolvency Law Committee from 2018 to 2021, contributing to key legal and structural reforms.

      (ii) He is credited with developing the National Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards and playing a critical role in reforming CSR rules to promote greater transparency and corporate accountability in India.

Sanjay Khanna Takes On Additional Charge as CMD of BPCL.

On 1st May 2025, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Mumbai-based Fortune Global 500 company under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), announced that Sanjay Khanna, the Director (Refineries), has assumed additional charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of BPCL.


      - Sanjay Khanna succeeded G. Krishnakumar, whose term ended on 30th April 2025.


      - With over 30 years of experience in refinery operations, technical services, and project implementation, Khanna brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.

     

Main Point :-   (i) As the Executive Director of Kochi Refinery, he was instrumental in commissioning BPCL's first niche petrochemical project – the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP).

      (ii) Sanjay Khanna is a Director on the Boards of Bharat Petro Resources Limited (BPRL) and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (RRPL).

ECI Appoints Rakesh Verma as DG of IIIDEM and Ashish Goyal as DG of Media.

In May 2025, the Election Commission of India (ECI) made two significant appointments to strengthen its administrative and media-related functions.


      - A 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Punjab cadre, Rakesh Verma assumed charge as the Director General (DG) of the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), New Delhi.


      - Prior to this role, he served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS), and held prominent positions in the Ministry of Tourism (MoT).

     

Main Point :-   (i) A 1996-batch officer of the Indian Information Service (IIS), Ashish Goyal took charge as Director General (DG), Media, at the ECI. Before this role, he served as the DG of the National Museum under the Ministry of Culture (MoC) and also held additional charge as Director of the Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad.

Former R&AW Chief Alok Joshi Appointed as Chairman of Newly Reconstituted NSAB.

In April 2025, the Government of India (GoI) reconstituted the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) and appointed Alok Joshi, former Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), as its new Chairman.


      - This strategic development aims to enhance India’s national security advisory framework in response to recent challenges.


      - The reconstitution of NSAB followed a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister (PM) of India, after the Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) terrorist attack.

      - Alok Joshi, a 1976-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Haryana cadre, served as the Chief of R&AW from December 30, 2012, to December 31, 2014.

Main Point :-   (i) The newly formed seven-member NSAB includes eminent retired officials from India’s military, police, and diplomatic sectors.

      (ii) The NSAB, established in 1998, serves as a key advisory body to the National Security Council (NSC) of India, which is chaired by the Prime Minister of India.

RBI Approves Interim Executive Committee to Lead IndusInd Bank During Leadership Transition.

In April 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the formation of an interim "Committee of Executives" to manage the operations of Mumbai-based IndusInd Bank Limited. This temporary arrangement is set to last up to three months or until a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is appointed, following the resignation of the bank’s Managing Director (MD) and CEO, Sumant Kathpalia.


      - The RBI's decision was prompted by the discovery of serious accounting discrepancies within the bank’s derivatives portfolio, raising concerns about governance and financial integrity. These discrepancies significantly impacted the bank's financial reporting, warranting immediate regulatory intervention.


      - The newly formed interim committee includes key senior executives from within the bank. Soumitra Sen, currently serving as the Head of Consumer Banking, and Anil Rao, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), will lead day-to-day operations during this transitional period.

      - The operations of the interim executive committee will be monitored by an Oversight Committee of the Board. This committee is chaired by Sunil Mehta, Chairman of the Board of IndusInd Bank, and comprises the heads of the Audit Committee, the Compensation and Nomination & Remuneration Committee, and the Risk Management Committee.

Main Point :-   (i) The Oversight Committee is tasked with ensuring continued stability and sound governance within the bank. Its role became especially critical after internal audits revealed accounting mistakes, including a major discrepancy of Rs. 1,959.98 crore in the profit and loss statement due to mismanagement of internal derivative transactions.

      (ii) Leadership changes began on April 28, 2025, when IndusInd Bank's Deputy CEO and Whole-time Director, Arun Khurana, resigned. His resignation came in direct response to the findings surrounding the accounting irregularities.

(iii) Following this, CEO Sumant Kathpalia also stepped down, accepting moral responsibility for the lapses. The discrepancies were brought to light through an external agency's investigation, which reported a cumulative negative impact of Rs. 1,959.98 crore on the bank’s Profit and Loss (P&L) account as of March 31, 2025.

In April 2025, Kamla Susheila Persad-Bissessar (commonly referred to as KPB), leader of the United National Congress (UNC), was re-elected as the 9th Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago for a five-year term, beginning on April 30, 2025.


      - She regained power after a resounding victory in the general elections held on April 28, 2025, where the UNC, in alliance with the Coalition of Interests (CoI), secured 26 out of 41 seats in the House of Representatives, comfortably surpassing the 21-seat majority threshold.


      - Kamla Persad-Bissessar succeeded the incumbent PM, Stuart Richard Young of the People's National Movement (PNM), who served from March 17, 2025, to April 29, 2025.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Kamla Susheila Persad-Bissessar, born to Indian descendants, is a distinguished lawyer and politician from Trinidad and Tobago. She made history by becoming the first woman to hold the roles of Prime Minister, Attorney General, and Opposition Leader in the country. Additionally, she served as the first female Chairperson-in-Office of the Commonwealth of Nations, further solidifying her prominence on the global stage.

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai Appointed as the 52nd Chief Justice of India.

In April 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna (BR) Gavai, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court of India (SCI), was announced to assume charge as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will take oath on 14th May 2025, succeeding CJI Sanjiv Khanna, who retires on 13th May 2025. Justice Gavai will hold the position till 23rd November 2025, marking his retirement date. He will become the second Dalit CJI in India's history after Justice KG Balakrishnan, who served from 2007 to 2010.


      - The appointment follows the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), under which the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) acts on the recommendation of the outgoing CJI. As per norms, Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65 years.


      - Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai began his legal career in 1985, enrolling as an advocate. He initially trained under Raja S. Bhonsale, who served as the former Advocate General and later a judge at the Bombay High Court.

In April 2025, T Koshy, the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), stepped down after successfully completing his three-year tenure. His last working day has been set as June 30, 2025.


      - Following his resignation, the ONDC board has temporarily delegated his responsibilities to an executive committee. However, Koshy will continue to offer advisory support to the organization for the next three months.

Daniel Noboa Secures Re-election as President of Ecuador.

In April 2025, Daniel Roy Gilchrist Noboa AzΓ­n was re-elected as the President of Ecuador for a full 4-year term after securing 55.8% of the votes in the presidential election. He defeated Luisa GonzΓ‘lez of the Citizen Revolution Movement, who received 44% of the vote share.

Brice Oligui Nguema Elected as Gabon's President for a 7-Year Term.

In April 2025, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who had been serving as the interim President of Gabon, was officially elected as the President of Gabon, as per the provisional results declared by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) of Gabon.


      - He won by a significant margin, securing 90.35% of the total votes, while his nearest competitor, former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, received only 3% of the vote share.


      - With this victory, Brice Oligui Nguema begins a full seven-year presidential term.

      - This was Gabon’s first presidential election since the 2023 military coup, which ended the Bongo political dynasty that ruled Gabon for over 56 years.

RBI Grants One-Year Extension to Sumant Kathpalia as CEO of IndusInd Bank.

In March 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted a one-year extension to Sumant Kathpalia, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IndusInd Bank, based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, effective from March 24, 2025, to March 23, 2026.


      - The approval follows IndusInd Bank's letter on September 27, 2024, addressing the proposal for extending his tenure. The reappointment is subject to shareholder approval.


      - In September 2022, the bank's board had approved his reappointment for three years, effective March 24, 2023, but RBI sanctioned only a two-year term. In September 2024, the board sought a three-year extension, from March 24, 2025, to March 23, 2028, but RBI has approved only a one-year extension.

In March 2025, Dr. Himanshu Pathak, a renowned agricultural scientist, assumed charge as the Director General (DG) of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), based in Hyderabad, Telangana.

In March 2025, the Government of India (GoI) appointed Ajay Bhadoo, an Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce (DoC) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), effective from March 3, 2025.


      - He will take up this new role while still managing his current responsibilities in the Department of Commerce. He will replace L Satya Srinivas, the current acting CEO of GeM.


      - Ajay Bhadoo is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1999 batch, belonging to the Gujarat cadre. He has over 20 years of experience in policy formulation and implementation.

      - He previously served as Deputy Election Commissioner at the Election Commission of India and has held various important roles, including Joint Secretary to former President Ram Nath Kovind, CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Board, and Commissioner for the Rajkot and Vadodara Municipal Corporations.

      - Tuhin Kanta Pandey is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Odisha cadre. He has worked in both state and central governments, handling key responsibilities across various departments.

Main Point :-   (i) Tuhin Kanta Pandey was the longest-serving secretary in the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Ministry of Finance (MoF). He also held charge of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), MoF, as well as the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoPP&P).

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, Appointed as Chairman of RTEF.

On 25 February 2025, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, was appointed as the Chairman of the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), a Section 8 entity established by the late Ratan Tata.


      - The executors of Ratan Tata's will, including Darius Khambata, Mehli Mistry, Shireen, and Diana Jejeebhoy, sought external legal advice before appointing Chandrasekaran.


      - Chandrasekaran will finalize the staff to manage the foundation and regulate its management structure in the near future.

      - However, it may take up to six months for Ratan Tata's will to go through all formalities and be approved by the Bombay High Court before his wealth is distributed.

Main Point :-   (i) The Foundation is focused on philanthropy and technological research aimed at benefiting Indian society.

Unilever CEO Hein Schumacher Resigns as CFO Fernando Fernandez Becomes Successor.

In February 2025, London (United Kingdom, UK)-based consumer goods giant Unilever PLC announced that Hein Schumacher, who joined the company in July 2023, will step down as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Board Director on March 1, 2025, and will officially leave the company on May 31, 2025.


      - Hein Schumacher will be replaced by Fernando Fernandez, who is currently serving as Unilever’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Executive Director.

ACC Approves One-Year Extension for Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi as DCGI.

In February 2025, the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved a one-year extension for Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi as the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), the head of India's apex health regulatory body, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), on a contract basis.


      - The extension will take effect from March 1, 2025, or until the appointment of a regular incumbent, whichever is earlier.


      - This approval follows the proposal by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) to extend his tenure until a suitable candidate is appointed.

      - Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi , who has been serving as DCGI since February 2023, was originally set to retire on February 28, 2025.

Main Point :-   (i) Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi also holds the additional charge of secretary-cum-scientific director at the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), MoH&FW.

      - The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the extension of Subrahmanyam’s tenure as CEO of NITI Aayog for one more year.


      - B.V.R. Subrahmanyam assumed the role of the 4th CEO of NITI Aayog in February 2023, succeeding Parameswaran Iyer, who served as the 3rd CEO of NITI Aayog.

Government of India Extends V. Anantha Nageswaran's Tenure as Chief Economic Advisor Until March 2027.

On February 20, 2025, the Government of India (GoI) extended the tenure of Venkatramanan (V). Anantha Nageswaran as Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) for an additional two years, until March 31, 2027.


      - The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Nageswaran's contract extension until March 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Nageswaran played a significant role in India’s annual Economic Survey 2024-25, which projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at 6.3% to 6.8% for Financial Year 2025-26.

      - Rekha Gupta has become Delhi's fourth woman CM, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi Marlena Singh.


      - Along with her, six cabinet ministers were sworn in, including Parvesh Singh Verma, who took oath as the Deputy CM.

RBI Approves Appointment of Prabdev Singh (P.D. Singh) as CEO of Standard Chartered India.

On February 17, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the appointment of Prabdev Singh (P.D. Singh) as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Standard Chartered India, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Singh will assume office on April 1, 2025, succeeding Zarin Daruwala, who will retire on March 31, 2025, after a decade-long tenure.


      - PD Singh will oversee operations in India and South Asia, with a tenure of 3 years.

President's Rule Imposed in Manipur Following CM Biren Singh's Resignation.

On February 13, 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) imposed President's Rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister (CM) N Biren Singh. This marks the 11th instance of President's Rule being imposed in the state since its formation in 1951.


      - The last instance of President's Rule in Manipur occurred between June 2, 2001, and March 6, 2002, lasting 277 days.


      - N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025, after nearly 21 months of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which began in May 2023. The violence resulted in over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands. He submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal.

      - N Biren Singh served as the 12th Chief Minister of Manipur from March 15, 2017, to February 8, 2025.

Main Point :-   (i) Due to the growing political instability, the Manipur Assembly, which had a tenure lasting until 2027, was placed under suspended animation. The Assembly was required to reconvene by February 12, 2025, as per Article 174(1) of the Indian Constitution, but failed to meet the deadline.

      (ii) Under Article 356 of the Indian Constitution, President's Rule suspends the state government, and the Governor assumes executive powers on behalf of the President of India. The elected government is dissolved, and the Governor becomes the executive head, managing the administration under the guidance of the Union Council of Ministers, headed by the Prime Minister.

(iii) President's Rule can remain in effect for up to 6 months, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of 3 years. Extensions require parliamentary approval every six months, and special conditions must be met after the first year. Since 1950, President's Rule has been imposed 134 times across 29 states and Union Territories, with Manipur and Uttar Pradesh seeing the most frequent impositions. Jammu & Kashmir holds the record for the longest duration of President's Rule, lasting over 12 years.

Konstantinos Tasoulas Elected as the New President of Greece.

On February 12, 2025, former House Speaker of Greece, Konstantinos Tasoulas, the candidate from the ruling conservative New Democracy (ND) party, was elected as the President of Greece (officially the Hellenic Republic) for a five-year term, effective from March 13, 2025. He secured 160 votes in the fourth round of voting in Greece's 300-member parliament.


      - Tasoulas will succeed Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Greece's first female president, as her five-year term concludes on March 13, 2025.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Konstantinos Tasoulas is a lawyer and former Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ioannina, Greece, in 2000.

      (ii) In 2006, Konstantinos Tasoulas was appointed as the parliamentary representative of the ND party, and in 2010, he became its General Secretary. In 2007, he also served as the Defense Deputy Minister of Greece.

(iii) From 2014 to 2015, Konstantinos Tasoulas served as the Minister of Culture and Sports in Greece, and from 2019 to 2025, he served as the President of the Hellenic Parliament.

Charanjot Singh Nanda Elected as the 73rd President of ICAI for the 2025-26 Term.

Chartered Accountant (C.A.) Charanjot Singh Nanda has been elected as the 73rd President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the world’s largest accountancy body, for the term 2025-26 during the 26th ICAI Council meeting held in New Delhi, Delhi. He has succeeded CA Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal.


      - The council has also elected Prasanna Kumar D, a C.A. from Andhra Pradesh (AP), Southern India Regional Council, as the Vice-President of ICAI for the term 2025-26.


      - The oath of office was administered by Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge) Arjun Meghwal, from the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) and the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (MoPA).

      - Charanjot Singh Nanda is a Fellow Member who has been practicing as a Chartered Accountant since 1991. He was elected as the Chairman of the Northern India Regional Council (NIRC) of ICAI during 2002-03. In 2004, he was elected to the Central Council of ICAI and has since served six terms. He is currently serving his seventh term as a council member for 2025-26.

Main Point :-   (i) In the year 2024-25, Charanjot Singh Nanda was elected as the Vice President of ICAI. Throughout his extensive career, he has chaired various committees of ICAI, including the Internal Audit Standards Board (IASB), the Committee for Members in Industry and Business, and the Women Members Empowerment Committee.

      (ii) He has represented ICAI in central government and regulatory committees, including the Quality Review Board and SEBI's Advisory Committees (2007-10). He has also represented ICAI on international platforms like SAFA and ACFE.

(iii) CA Prasanna Kumar D was elected to the Central Council of ICAI for three consecutive terms (24th, 25th, and 26th Council). He served as the Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Branch of ICAI during 2001-02 and was a member of the Southern India Regional Council from 2007 to 2016, where he also held the position of Chairman in 2013-14.
