GRSE Partners with Public Works Department (PWD) Nagaland to Build Modular Steel Bridges.

In March 2025, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Public Works Department (PWD) (Roads & Bridges) of Nagaland, in Kohima (Nagaland), for the supply of 8 sets of Double Lane Modular Steel Bridges in the state.


      - This MoU marks the first-ever collaboration between GRSE and a Northeastern state, aligning with the Government of India's (GOI) "Make In India" (MII) initiative for regional development.


      - Previously, GRSE has supplied modular bridges to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), various state governments, and friendly countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. To date, GRSE has supplied over 5,800 Modular Bridges.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The MoU was signed by Subrato Ghosh, Director (Personnel), GRSE, and Swarai Meru, Chief Engineer, PWD Nagaland, in the presence of Natarajan Partheepan, General Manager (Bailey Bridges), GRSE.

      (ii) Kolkata (West Bengal)-based GRSE is a Mini Ratna Category I company that dates back to 1884 and was taken over by the Government of India (GoI) in 1960.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio Presents Rs 24,849 Crore Budget for FY26.

In March 2025, Nagaland Chief Minister (CM) Neiphiu Rio, who also holds the finance portfolio, presented a Rs 24,849 crore state budget for the Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26) in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima, Nagaland.


      - The budget estimates the total receipts for FY26 at Rs 24,849.01 crore and total expenditure at Rs 24,699.01 crore.


      - CM Rio highlighted that the total development outlay, including Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), stands at Rs 5,819.24 crore for FY26, with Rs 1,200 crore contributed from the state's own resources.

      - This marks an increase of Rs 190 crore compared to the previous year, registering a growth of 18.81%.

Main Point :-   (i) An allocation of Rs 5 crore has been made for the Nagaland Skill Mission, which aims to train 5,000 youth in 2025-26 in self-employment and private-sector employment, with entrepreneurship linked to the Chief Minister’s Micro Finance Initiative (CMMFI).

      (ii) The budget allocates Rs 15 crore for next year's premium of the Chief Minister's Life Insurance Scheme (CMLIS), which was launched on October 1, 2024, with nearly 4 lakh enrollments.

Nagaland Forest Management Project Wins the SKOCH Award.

The Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) was honored with the prestigious SKOCH Award 2024 for its efforts in improving forest ecosystems and supporting income generation.


      - The award was presented on 15th February 2025 during the 100th SKOCH Summit at Silver Oak Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.


      - Ango Konyak, Deputy Project Director of NFMP, along with Wennyei Konyak, Resident Commissioner of Nagaland House, New Delhi, received the award on behalf of the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (DEFCC), Government of Nagaland (GON).

      - The NFMP is a project implemented by the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (DEFCC), Government of Nagaland, with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Main Point :-   (i) The project aims to enhance forest ecosystems and income generation by re-establishing Jhum areas and supporting livelihoods through village-specific interventions carried out by Joint Forest Management Committees.

      (ii) The project, running from 2017 to 2027, will cover 185 villages across 11 districts and 22 Forest Ranges. It plans to cover an area of 79,096 hectares under Forest Intervention and establish 555 Self Help Groups (SHGs) to improve livelihoods.

(iii) The SKOCH Award is one of the highest independent honors, awarded since 1997, recognizing states and organizations in the fields of governance, technology, economics, and the social sector for their dedicated and independent outcome-based assessment process.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio launched Economic Empowerment Initiatives.

In November 2024, Nagaland's Chief Minister (CM) Neiphiu Rio inaugurated a series of important initiatives at the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), located at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima, Nagaland. These initiatives aim to boost the state's tourism, transport, agriculture, and entrepreneurial sectors.


      - The CM launched Ura Cabs, a local taxi platform designed to offer easy travel experiences for both tourists and local taxi operators.


      - The CM also flagged off new tourism vehicles under the Nagaland Tourism Connect Scheme. This event marks the completion of extensive tourism training programs in preparation for the 25th Hornbill Festival, which will be celebrated from December 1-10, 2024, at Kisama, Nagaland.

      - Digital Piggery Insurance, developed with IRDAI and Tata AIG, is an app-based system simplifying registration and claims for piggery farmers, while entrepreneurs benefit from a 12% vehicle purchase discount and up to a 42% subsidy under the CM's Microfinance Initiative (CMMFI).

Main Point :-   (i) The Nagaland Logistics Connect initiative was launched to improve the state's transportation and logistics infrastructure.

      (ii) The CM's Universal Life (UL) Insurance Scheme was introduced to provide financial protection to families in case of unexpected events, reinforcing the government’s commitment to social and financial security.

(iii) The Hornbill Festival, known as the "Festival of Festivals," is a 10-day annual event organized by the Nagaland Government since 2000 to celebrate Naga cultural heritage, with the 2024 theme "Cultural Connect."
