Private Firms Secure ₹25,000 Crore Share in HAL’s Mega Deal for 156 Light Combat Helicopters.
In April 2025, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) secured a major deal worth ₹62,500 crore from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the supply of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) to the Indian Army (IA) and the Indian Air Force (IAF). Following the approval of this mega deal, HAL has planned to allocate approximately ₹25,000 crore (40%) of the contract value to private sector firms.
- This strategic move is expected to boost the defence industrial ecosystem and significantly promote self-reliance in aerospace manufacturing across India at all levels.
- The order for 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) will be split between the Indian Army (90 helicopters) and the Indian Air Force (66 helicopters) for deployment along the China and Pakistan borders. This move marks a significant push towards job creation and aerospace ecosystem expansion within India.

On April 5, 2025, the Indian Army (IA) successfully demonstrated its Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) capability during Exercise SARVSHAKTI, conducted by the Trishakti Corps in India’s Eastern Theatre.
- The exercise marked a significant step in integrating cutting-edge technologies, including drones, autonomous systems, and AI-enabled platforms, into tactical-level military operations. Its primary objective is to boost interoperability, faster decision-making, and battlefield awareness for Multi-Domain Operations (MDO).

MoD Grants In-Principle Approval for Establishing Adilabad Airport in Telangana.
In April 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently granted in-principle approval for civil aircraft operations at the Adilabad airfield in Telangana. Originally established during the Nizam era, this airfield is set to be developed into a joint-use facility catering to both military and civilian purposes.

Indian Army Conducts 'Prachand Prahar' Drill in High-Altitude Himalayan Region.
In March 2025, the Indian Army (IA), in collaboration with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and other branches of the Indian Armed Forces, conducted a high-intensity, integrated multi-domain warfare exercise, ‘Ex Prachand Prahar,’ in the high-altitude terrain of Arunachal Pradesh (AR).
- The exercise, held from March 25 to 27, 2025, under the Eastern Command, aimed to enhance the joint operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
- The exercise demonstrated the Indian Armed Forces’ ability to execute multi-spectrum operations in challenging mountainous terrain along the Northern Borders.

(i) The exercise began with the deployment of advanced surveillance assets from all three branches of the armed forces, including aircraft from the Indian Air Force (IAF), maritime aircraft from the Indian Navy (IN), helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), space-based resources from the Indian Army (IA), and Special Forces.

MoD Inks Two Contracts Worth Rs 62,700 Crore with HAL for Delivery of 156 LCH Prachand to the Armed Forces.
In March 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed two contracts with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based 'Navratna' Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Defence, for the supply of 156 indigenous Light Combat Helicopters (LCH), Prachand, along with associated training and equipment, at a total cost of Rs 62,700 crore, excluding taxes.
- The contracts were signed in the presence of Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, MoD, and are aimed at enhancing the combat capability of the Armed Forces at high altitudes.

(i) According to MoD, the first contract is for the supply of 66 LCHs to the Indian Air Force (IAF), while the second is for the supply of 90 LCHs to the Indian Army (IA).
(ii) The supply of these LCHs is expected to begin from the third year (2027-28) and will be spread over the next five years.

14th Edition of India-Russia Naval Exercise 'INDRA' Begins Off Chennai.
In March 2025, the 14th edition of the bilateral naval exercise 'INDRA' between India and Russia commenced off the coast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN). This six-day exercise, running until April 2, 2025, highlights the strong maritime partnership and strategic collaboration between the two nations.
- Launched in 2003, Exercise 'INDRA' symbolizes the long-standing strategic partnership between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Russian Navy.
- Over the years, it has evolved into a key platform for maritime cooperation, reinforcing naval interoperability and operational coordination between both nations.
- India hosted the 13th edition of Exercise INDRA in the Bay of Bengal in November 2023.

(i) The exercise is structured into two phases. The Harbour Phase will take place from March 28 to 30, 2025, in Chennai. It includes the opening ceremony, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs), reciprocal ship visits, sports events, and pre-sail briefings for participating personnel.

MoD Inks Rs 2,500 Crore Deals for Anti-Tank Missiles and Light Vehicles.
In March 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed two major contracts worth Rs 2,500 crore under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured, IDDM) category to bolster the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The agreements, finalized in the presence of Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of MoD.
- The MoD signed a contract with Chennai (Tamil Nadu)-based Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) for the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) Tracked Version and with Pune (Maharashtra)-based Force Motors Limited & Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Mahindra and Mahindra Limited for the supply of light vehicles.
- Both projects align with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, aiming to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.
- The contract, worth Rs 1,801.34 crore, was awarded for the NAMIS developed by Hyderabad (Telangana)-based DRDL, a unit of DRDO. The missile system has a range of 500 meters to 4 km, a speed of 230 meters per second, and is designed to enhance the Mechanised Infantry’s anti-tank capabilities with fire-and-forget technology and advanced sighting for precision strikes.

(i) The MoD signed a Rs 698.66 crore deal for 5,000 light vehicles, manufactured by Pune (Maharashtra)-based Force Motors Limited and Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. These vehicles feature an 800 kg payload capacity and improved engine power for enhanced mobility across diverse terrains.
(ii) The NAMIS (Tracked) is a third-generation anti-tank guided missile system designed for mechanized warfare. It offers fire-and-forget capability, reducing the need for manual guidance, improving battlefield survivability, and increasing lethality. The system is mounted on a tank-track platform and carries the NAG missile.
(iii) The newly procured light vehicles incorporate modern automotive technology to support troop movement, logistics, and rapid deployment. Their ability to operate in difficult terrains, including deserts and mountains, ensures seamless mobility for the Armed Forces during critical missions.

GSL Launches Second Frigate 'Tavasya' Under Project 1135.6 for Indian Navy.
On March 22, 2025, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a leading defense shipyard based in Goa, India, launched 'Tavasya', the second frigate of Project 1135.6 (Vard 1259). This frigate was built with 56% indigenous content, a significant improvement from the 25% indigenization seen in its foreign-built counterparts.
- The frigate is designed for multi-role operations, including air, surface, and subsurface combat, enhancing the Indian Navy's (IN) strength and dominance in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

- Tavasya, named after Bhima's mace in the Mahabharata, symbolizes the Indian Navy's strength. It features stealth capabilities, BrahMos missile systems, torpedo launchers, and advanced sonar and sensor systems, enhancing its combat effectiveness.
Main Point :-
(i) In October 2016, India and Russia signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for four Krivak-class stealth frigates. Two were built in Russia and imported for USD 1 billion, while the remaining two are being constructed in India by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) under a USD 500 million technology transfer agreement with ROSOBORONEXPORT (Russia) for materials and design assistance.
(ii) INS Tushil, the first Russian-built frigate, was commissioned on December 9, 2024, while INS Tamal, the second, is undergoing trials and is expected to be commissioned by June 2025.
(iii) On January 25, 2019, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India (GoI) signed a contract with GSL for the construction of two Project 1135.6 frigates. The first indigenous frigate, Triput, was launched on July 23, 2024, followed by Tavasya as the second.

DAC Approves ₹54,000 Crore Defence Acquisitions and CCS Clears ₹7,000 Crore ATAGS Artillery Procurement Deal.
On 20 March 2025, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), operating under the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and led by Union Minister Rajnath Singh, approved eight capital acquisition proposals worth over ₹54,000 crore. These procurements aim to enhance the operational strength of the Indian Army (IA), the Indian Navy (IN), and the Indian Air Force (IAF).
- Under the 'Year of Reforms 2025' initiative, the DAC has introduced new guidelines to streamline the Capital Acquisition Process.

i. The DAC has sanctioned the procurement of a 1350 HorsePower (HP) engine, Varunastra torpedoes, and Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) Aircraft Systems.
ii. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi, has approved a ₹7,000 crore contract for the procurement of 155 millimeter (mm) Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS).
IA plans to acquire 307 units along with 327 gun-towing vehicles, gradually replacing older 105 mm and 130 mm artillery systems.

On March 12, 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, Ministry of Steel and Ministry of Heavy Industries (MoHI), launched three Research and Development (R&D) schemes and the 'SteelCollab' web portal under the Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) to enhance steel sector innovation. The launch took place during the event "Catalyzing R&D in the Indian Steel Sector" in New Delhi (Delhi).
- The launched schemes include the Challenge Method, Open Innovation Method, and Start-up Accelerator Scheme, each designed to address critical challenges, encourage research, and support emerging steel technologies.

Indian Navy Inducts 9th ACTCM Barge LSAM 23 to Enhance Maritime Logistics.
On March 12, 2025, the Indian Navy (IN) conducted the induction ceremony of the 9th Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge, Landing Ship Ammunition (LSAM) 23 (Yard 133), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Commodore Manish Vig, General Manager (Quality Assurance), Naval Dockyard (Mumbai), was the Chief Guest at the event.
- In 2021, the Indian Navy signed a contract with Thane (Maharashtra)-based M/s Suryadipta Projects Private Limited, a Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) shipyard, for the construction and delivery of 11 ACTCM Barges.
- Out of these, 8 barges have already been delivered.
- The shipyard has also secured an additional contract to build 4 Sullage Barges for the Indian Navy, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to supporting MSMEs.

On 12 March 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a ₹2,906 crore capital acquisition contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh (UP), a leading defense electronics manufacturing facility, for the procurement of Low-level Transportable Radar (LLTR), known as "Ashwini," for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

India's MoD Inks $248 Million Deal with Russia’s RoE for T-72 Tank Engines Procurement.
On 7 March 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India (GoI), signed a contract worth USD 248 million with Moscow (Russia)-based Rosoboronexport (RoE) for the procurement of 1000 Horsepower (HP) engines for T-72 tanks. These engines will be supplied in fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi-knocked down conditions.
- The agreement includes the Transfer of Technology (ToT) from RoE to Avadi (Chennai, Tamil Nadu)-based Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory) for integration and licensed manufacturing of engines.
- This initiative aligns with the ‘Make in India’ mission in the defence sector.
Main Point :-
(i) The T-72 tank, first introduced in India in the 1970s, remains a crucial part of the Indian Army’s (IA) armored fleet, with approximately 2,500 tanks in active service. These tanks are currently powered by a 780 HP engine.
(ii) Equipping the existing T-72 fleet with 1000 HP engines will enhance the Indian Army’s battlefield mobility and offensive capabilities.
(iii) Apart from its 2,400 T-72 tanks, the Indian Army has inducted 1,300 T-90S 'Bhishma' tanks out of the 1,657 being manufactured under license from Russia by the Heavy Vehicles Factory.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently conducted the integrated Tri-Service Special Forces exercise named Exercise 'Desert Hunt 2025' at Air Force Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan, from 24 to 28 February 2025.
- The exercise brought together elite Special Forces units from the Indian Army (IA), the Indian Navy (IN), and the IAF to practice interoperability, coordination, and combat efficiency in simulated real-world scenarios.
- During the exercise, Para (Special Forces) of IA, Marine Commandos (MARCOS) of IN, and Garud (Special Forces) of IAF participated together in a simulated combat environment.

Indian Navy Transfers INS Guldar to MTDC for Development of Underwater Museum and Artificial Reef.
In February 2025, the Indian Navy (IN) handed over the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Guldar, a Landing Ship Tank, to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) at Karwar, Maharashtra, on an 'as is where is' basis for conversion into India's first underwater museum and artificial reef.
- The MTDC has taken the ship under its charge to convert it into an underwater museum and artificial reef near the Nivati Rocks, off the coast of Vengurla in Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra.
Main Point :-
(i) The conversion process will involve a thorough cleaning of the ship to remove any potential pollutants or hazardous materials, ensuring environmental approvals as per guidelines.
(ii) The INS Guldar was built at Gdynia Shipyard, Poland, and was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1985.
(iii) The design was developed in collaboration with the Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune, Maharashtra, and the Indian Army.

Military Exercise 'Jal-Thal-Raksha 2025' Conducted in Gujarat to Strengthen Coastal Security.
On February 16, 2025, the Indian Army (IA) conducted a large-scale military exercise, 'Jal-Thal-Raksha 2025,' at Bet Dwarka, Gujarat. The primary objective was to strengthen security in Dwarka and its surrounding islands, addressing recent illegal encroachments.
- The exercise saw participation from 11 Ahmedabad and 31 Jamnagar Army units, along with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Marine Police.
- The exercise aimed to enhance coordination between government departments, paramilitary forces, and defense forces during emergencies such as terrorist attacks or wartime situations.

(i) During the exercise, security personnel were deployed to the coast via hovercraft. The exercise simulated securing critical infrastructure and responding to potential land-based threats, enhancing overall preparedness.

India & Egypt Launch 3rd Joint Military Exercise ‘Cyclone 2025’ in Rajasthan.
The 3rd edition of the India-Egypt joint military exercise 'Cyclone 2025' commenced at the Maharajan Field Range, Rajasthan, focusing on enhancing defence cooperation and special forces interoperability in desert conditions. The exercise will be conducted over 14 days, from February 10-23, 2025.
- Exercise 'Cyclone 2025' aims to foster cooperation between the two armies by facilitating discussions, joint training sessions, and military drills, further strengthening their strategic partnership.
- Exercise Cyclone has been conducted between India and Egypt since 2023 as a joint military training initiative.
- The exercise aligns with Chapter VII of the United Nations (UN) Charter, emphasizing international security and military collaboration, and its 2nd edition was held in Anshas, Egypt, from January 22 to February 1, 2024.
Main Point :-
(i) Cyclone 2025 is a joint military exercise focused on combat in urban areas and hostage rescue. The Indian Army's Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) and Egypt’s Commando Squadron and Airborne Platoon are participating under the motto, "Together we train, together we excel." The operation includes counter-terrorism missions, raids, reconnaissance, and special forces skills such as sniping, combat free fall, surveillance, and target designation.
(ii) The exercise will also feature military demonstrations, discussions, and training on handling Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), countering them, and providing first aid in combat situations. Special focus will be given to operational planning and execution in challenging environments.

MoD Signs ₹642 Crore Contract with BEL for 28 EON-51 Systems for Indian Navy.
In February 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a ₹642.17 crore contract with Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of 28 EON-51 Electro-Optical Fire Control Systems (EOFCS) for the Indian Navy (IN).
- This agreement, signed in New Delhi (Delhi), falls under the 'Buy (Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured))' category, reinforcing India's focus on indigenous defense production.
- The EON-51 systems will be installed on 11 New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) and three Cadet Training Ships (CTS).

The Indian Navy (IN) Chiefs' Conclave 2025 was held at Nausena Bhawan, the IN headquarters in New Delhi (Delhi), from February 8 to 9, 2025. The conclave brought together eight former Chiefs of Naval Staff (CNS) alongside the current CNS, Dinesh Kumar Tripathi.
- It was conducted as part of the IN’s efforts to achieve full self-reliance by 2047, focusing on strengthening its capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
- The conclave aimed to harness the knowledge and collective experience of former CNS while providing updates on the latest developments and policy initiatives of the IN.
- Former CNS were briefed on an operational update, covering policy initiatives, technological advancements, materials, operational logistics, and long-term strategic plans.
