It is Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year for 2023, an annual recognition given to a word that dominates searches and lookup volumes on the dictionary's website. "2023 saw a substantial increase in high-volume lookups compared to most years, driven by stories and conversations about AI, celebrity culture, identity and social media," the dictionary's announcement said. Authentic is difficult to define and subject to debate – two reasons why it sends many people to the dictionary. Herminia Ibarra, a professor at the London School of Economics, told Make It last month that this concept can also be a crutch that hinders your career development. The dictionary said authenticity wasn't the only buzzword to see a jolt of popularity on Merriam-Webster's website this year. Here are the other 13 words it highlighted as standouts – ridge, deepfake, coronation, dystopian, ego, ax, burst, doppelganger, rule, impeach, seminal, kibbutz, deadname.

The World Health Organization (WHO) unveiled a new framework for building climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems
The World Health Organization (WHO) says climate change is a serious threat to human health. According to WHO, 3.5 million people die each year in the Western Pacific from environmental causes such as air pollution, extreme weather events or water-borne diseases. One person dies every 14 seconds due to air pollution in this region. High levels of air pollution are also increasing non-communicable diseases, including stroke and heart and lung diseases. The impact of climate change on human health is greatest in small Pacific island developing countries, which have the lowest carbon footprints. According to WHO, each year these countries make up two-thirds of the countries globally that suffer the most damage from environmental disasters. The Sixth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released on April 4, shows that limiting rising temperatures to about 2 degrees Celsius still requires global greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025 and Needs to be reduced by one-fourth.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also cut its 2023-24 growth forecast for India to 6.1% from its July estimate, citing higher-than-expected consumption during Q1. Meanwhile, India's retail inflation eased from a 15-month high in July to 5.02% in September due to softening food prices.
