This integration enables pensioners to access services such as pension slips, life certificate submission status, due and drawn statements, and Form-16 seamlessly.

Moreover, the central bank, in a statement, announced that it would maintain the FPI limits for investment in state government securities and corporate bonds at 2 percent and 15 percent, respectively, of the outstanding securities stocks for FY25. The allocation of incremental changes in the g-sec limit (in absolute terms) over the two sub-categories – ‘General’ and ‘Long-term’ – shall be retained at 50:50 for 2024-25. Further, the aggregate limit of the notional amount of Credit Default Swaps sold by FPIs shall be 5 percent of the outstanding stock of corporate bonds. Accordingly, an additional limit of Rs 2,54,500 crore has been set out for FY25.

The central bank had issued directions on April 2, 2024, to the entity to stop the issuance and operation of its Prepaid Payment Instruments or Wallets and refund the balances held in the wallets within 15 days. Later, it was extended by 45 days (May 17, 2024) at the entity's request.

Of the 2,431 lakes larger than 10 hectares identified during 2016-17, 676 glacial lakes have notably expanded since 1984. 601 of the 676 lakes have expanded more than twice while 10 lakes have grown between 1.5 to two times and 65 lakes 1.5 times. 130 of the 676 lakes are situated within India, with 65, seven, and 58 located in the Indus, Ganga and the Brahmaputra river basins, respectively. An elevation-based analysis revealed that 314 lakes are located in the 4,000-5,000-metre range and 296 above 5,000 metres.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lay out with guidelines for the voluntary conversion of small finance banks (SFBs) into universal banks. To be eligible for conversion into a universal bank, the RBI stipulates that only listed SFBs will qualify. Those intending to convert must have a minimum net worth of Rs1,000 crore. Also, the SFBs must have a scheduled status and a satisfactory track record of at least five years with a gross non-performing asset (NPA) of 3 percent or less and a net NPA of 1 percent or less in the past two financial years. Furthermore, interested SFBs must have reported a net profit in the past two financial years and met the prescribed capital adequacy norms. The RBI requires SFBs to provide a detailed rationale for their desire to convert into universal bank. Those with a diversified loan portfolio will be preferred. Further, upon transition, the bank will be subjected to all the norms including NOFHC structure (as applicable) as per the said guidelines.

During the liquidation phase of a scheme, an AIF can give unsold investments to investors or go into dissolution, but it needs approval from at least 75 percent of investors by value. Before getting investor consent, the AIF/manager must arrange bids for at least 25 percent of the unliquidated investments' value.

A rare butterfly species named 'Neptis philyra' (Nymphalidae family), also known as the long-streak sailor, has been discovered for the first time in India at the Tale Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS), Arunachal Pradesh by a team of butterfly enthusiasts. Previously known to be found across various regions of East Asia, including eastern Siberia, Korea, Japan, and central and southwest China. It has serrated wings with rich brownish-black on the upper side and yellow-brown on the underside. It has a white cell streak on the forewing that forms a “hockey stick” pattern.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has partnered with Reserve Bank's arm RBIH to put in place a system which will enable faster processing of agricultural loans. NABARD will integrate its e-KCC loan origination system portal with the Public Tech Platform for Frictionless Credit (PTPFC) of Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RBI. NABARD has developed the loan origination system portal to facilitate digital Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan processing for cooperative banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). The digitisation of agricultural lending will ensure instant doorstep delivery of credit to farmers while improving the efficiency of banks, advancing NABARD's mission of fostering rural prosperity. Through the integration with PTPFC, about 351 district and state cooperative banks and 43 RRBs will gain access to a range of services including digital state land records, satellite data, KYC, credit history and transliteration for more effective credit underwriting.

By tracking this index, the fund aims to attain long-term capital growth by strategically investing in securities that constitute the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index (TRI). The minimum investment amount will be Rs500 and in multiples of Re 1 for purchases and of Re 0.01 for switches. For SIP, the minimum amount is Rs1,200 (subject to a minimum of 12 SIP instalments of Rs100 each for monthly instalments and Rs300 for quarterly instalments). The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved CRISIL ESG Ratings & Analytics as a Category 1 provider of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings. CRISIL ESG Ratings, a unit of Crisil, was incorporated after Sebi amended the SEBI (Credit Rating Agencies) Regulations, 1999, to include provisions on ESG Rating Providers (ERPs) 2023. The rating provider launched its ESG scoring business in 2021 and now tracks over 1,000 companies across 65 sectors. This business will now be transferred to the subsidiary Crisil ESG Ratings. The approval comes at an opportune time when ESG disclosures have been improving and there is increasing realisation in the financial markets on the need for independent ESG ratings that will support decision-making for issuers and investors, and channel funds towards sustainable growth of the Indian economy.

Hitachi Payment Services has launched India's first upgradable ATMs wherein, an ATM unit can be converted to a cash recycling machine (CRM) as and when a bank needs it, eliminating the need for a separate CRM. Most banks offer deposit services at branches, and withdrawals can happen at off-branch locations. With a way to upgrade ATMs to CRMs, banks eliminate the need to replace ATMs. These machines will be UPI-enabled for cash deposit and withdrawal.

The pilot project is designed to produce 14 kilograms of green hydrogen daily and will be used for turbine maintenance and electricity generation.

According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, Government has expanded the composition of the committee formed to look into pricing reforms for drugs and medical devices by admitting various industry bodies. The committee will now have representation from industry bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), the Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI), and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), among others. The terms of reference of the committee include discussing institutional reforms within the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) and ways to balance price and availability of essential medicines, while providing incentives to the industry to sustain growth and exports. In line with this mission, the department has also invited medical device associations such as Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI) and Association of Medical Device Industry (AIMED) to be part of the committee and present the views of the medtech industry.

Effective from 24 April 2024, the RBI has raised the minimum capital requirement for asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) from ₹100 crore to ₹300 crore. Under the new directives, ARCs, as of 11 October 2022, have been granted a transition period to achieve the revised minimum Net Owned Fund (NOF) requirement. They are expected to maintain a NOF of ₹200 crore by March 31, 2024, and reach the ₹300 crore mark by March 31, 2026. Furthermore, ARCs with a minimum NOF of ₹1,000 crore will be eligible to act as resolution applicants. However, these investments are subject to a cap of 10% of the ARC's NOF on maximum investment in such short-term instruments.

These actions were necessitated based on significant concerns arising out of the RBI’s IT examination of the bank in 2022 and 2023 and the bank’s continued failure to address these concerns in a comprehensive and timely manner. For two consecutive years, the bank was assessed to be deficient in its IT Risk and Information Security Governance, contrary to requirements under Regulatory guidelines.

The firm, backed by Prosus, can now on-board new merchants and provide them digital payment services. PayU is a payment gateway that also offers services including buy-now-pay-later, and competes with the likes of Tiger Global-backed Razorpay and Walmart-owned PhonePe. Last year 2023, the RBI returned the fintech firm’s application to operate as a payment aggregator due to its complex corporate structure and directed it to reapply. Following this, PayU had to pause on-boarding new merchants for its online payment aggregation business. Similar bans were imposed on Paytm, Razorpay and Cashfree.

IndusInd Bank launched the programmable CBDC payout to 50 farmers in the Ratnagiri area of Maharashtra as part of this trial, and it will eventually cover about 1000 farmers. This is a major step forward in the adoption of creative financial solutions for the agriculture industry. As part of this project, IndusInd Bank is creating digital wallets and overseeing CBDC transfers.

The new platform has received anchor investment from the Green Climate Fund which has committed to invest up to $200 million. Recently, this bulletproof jacket was successfully tested at TBRL, Chandigarh as per BIS 17051-2018. The front hard armour panel (HAP) of this jacket "defeats multiple hits (six shots) of 7.62x54 R API (sniper rounds) in both ICW (in-conjunction with) and standalone design. The areal density of ICW hard armour panel (HAP) and standalone HAP is less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively.

Agreement was signed under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) of the DoT which supports domestic companies and institutions in technology design, development, and commercialization of telecommunication products and solutions for affordable broadband and mobile services in rural and remote areas. The initiative will establish a real-time 5G and Beyond testbed (in compliance with O-RAN) to demonstrate automated network management and slicing techniques alongside specific application use-cases such as smart metering, remotely operated vehicles, etc.

The exercise witnessed participation of Ships, Submarines, Aircrafts and Special Forces. XPOL was conducted in multiple phases including combat training in a realistic scenario during the Tactical Phase and successful conduct of various firings during the Weapon Phase towards reaffirming Indian Navy’s capability to deliver ordnance on target. In addition to the participation of assets from Eastern Naval Command, the exercise also witnessed participation of assets from IAF, Andaman & Nicobar Command and Coast Guard indicating a very high degree of interoperability amongst the Services.

This was the steepest year-on-year increase since 2009. The 10 largest spenders in 2023—led by the United States, China and Russia—all increased their military spending. Russia’s military spending increased by 24 percent to an estimated $109 billion in 2023, marking a 57 percent rise since 2014. India was the fourth largest military spender globally in 2023. At $83.6 billion, its military expenditure was 4.2 percent higher than in 2022.

The aggregate assets of these three top Indian lenders rose sharply by 50.5 percent to $1.51 trillion in 2023. Mainland Chinese banks dominated the list. This clean fuel can be blended with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The MoU between CSIR-IICT and BHEL was signed in Hyderabad. This initiative by the Ministry of science and technology is for the country’s net-zero emissions goals in partnership with industry for deploying carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies in sectors such as coal gasification.

ReNew Energy Global has signed an initial agreement with JERA Co Inc, Japan’s largest power generation company, to jointly evaluate development of a green ammonia production project in India. Under the agreement, ReNew, through its subsidiary, ReNew E-Fuels Private Limited, and JERA will jointly evaluate development of a green ammonia production project in Paradip, Odisha. The project will utilise approximately 500 MW of high-capacity utilisation factor renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, a key feedstock for green ammonia. The project is likely to have a production capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030. JERA will have the right to offtake this green ammonia for Japan. There will be a joint study to evaluate the commercial viability of the project.

He later served as the Director General of Naval Operations from July 2020 to May 2021, during which the Navy maintained a high operational tempo despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. From June 2021 to February 2023, Vice Admiral Tripathi served as the Chief of Personnel.

A C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) transported the missile and the launchers to the Philippines for the country's marine forces. Under the January 2022 deal, India will supply three batteries of the missiles, their launchers and related equipment. It was the first export of the BrahMos missile by India.

The site was discovered by a team comprising K.P Rao, history professor of the University of Hyderabad, and Ch Praveen Raju, research scholar from Yogi Vemana University, Andhra Pradesh. The side slabs are arranged with slabs following the shape of the cap-stone. Hence, each ‘dolmenoid cist’ has a unique shape as dictated by the cap-stone. This site has new types of monuments, which have not come to light so far anywhere in other regions of India. Another significant discovery is an Iron Age megalithic site at Ooragutta near Bandala village in SS Tadvai mandal of Mulugu district. Additionally, two new rock art sites have been discovered at Damaratogu in Gundala mandal of Bhadradri Kothagudem district. One of these sites, known as 'Devarlabanda Mula', exclusively depicts animals and no humans, suggesting a cultural significance possibly related to hunting or animal worship.

The missile followed the desired path using way point navigation and demonstrated very low altitude sea-skimming flight. This successful flight test has also established the reliable performance of the indigenous propulsion system developed by Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), Bengaluru.

The notification that will come into effect from 16 April 2024 has been issued just a few days away from the SpaceX CEO Musk's likely meeting with India's burgeoning space tech startups during his first-ever visit to the country on April 22. Up to 100 percent FDI is now allowed under the automatic route for manufacturing of components and systems or sub-systems for satellites, ground segment and user segment, Up to 74 percent FDI is now permitted under the automatic route for satellite manufacturing and operation, satellite data products and Ground Segment and User Segment. Up to 49 percent will be permitted under the automatic route for launch vehicles and associated systems or sub-systems and creation of spaceports for launching and receiving spacecraft.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has signed a record number of 125 Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs) with Indian taxpayers in 2023-24. This includes 86 Unilateral APAs (UAPAs) and 39 Bilateral APAs (BAPAs). This marks the highest ever APA signings in any financial year since the launch of the APA programme. The number of APAs signed in 2023-24 also represents a 31 percent increase compared to the 95 APAs signed during the preceding financial year. With this, the total number of APAs since inception of the APA programme has gone up to 641, comprising 506 UAPAs and 135 BAPAs.

Government Establishes Panel to Drive Legislation for Optimal Mining of Critical Minerals.

The government has set up a panel that would recommend legislative measures to facilitate economically viable recovery of critical minerals which are found in small quantities. Critical mineral blocks like lithium are crucial for manufacturing of electric vehicles. The 7-member panel under the chairmanship of NITI Aayog member V K Saraswat, will suggest legislative measures to ensure optimal and scientific mining of deep-seated mineral deposits such as copper, gold, and diamond among others, which are formed in the form of veins and can generally be extracted through underground mining only. The committee will also formulate a strategy to popularise the impact of mining reforms among states. Critical mineral blocks like lithium are crucial for manufacturing of electric vehicles. Last year, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) established 5.9 million tonnes of inferred resources of lithium in the Salal-Haimana area of Jammu & Kashmir.

Nano Urea Plus is a new version of nano urea meant for meeting crop nitrogen requirements at critical growth phases. The government has approved Nano Urea Plus in liquid form with 16 percent nitrogen content and pH value of 4-8.5 and viscosity of 5-30. This product will be manufactured by the cooperative major IFFCO for a period of three years. IFFCO's Nano Urea Plus is an advanced formulation of Nano Urea in which nutrition is redefined to meet crop nitrogen requirements at critical growth phases. It is used in place of conventional urea and other nitrogenous fertilisers for promoting soil health, farmer's profitability & sustainable environment.

Apart from this, GI registration has also been issued for Bareilly Zardozi, Cane-Bamboo Craft, Tharu Embroidery, Pilkhuwa Hand-block Print Textile. With this the number of GI products at the state level has now reached 75. There are 58 handicrafts and 17 agricultural and food products. This is the record for most GI tags in the name of any state.

Apart from banks and the bond market, more climate funds are scheduled to be launched in GIFT City.

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has said that India's Gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to grow at 8-8.3 percent in the current fiscal (FY25). The country's GDP will grow at an average of 6.7 percent over the next 23 years to become a $34.7 trillion economy by 2047, with a per capita income of $21,000. Gradually after 2035, the growth rate will start decelerating from the peak, and on an average, our growth rate, the real GDP (gross domestic product), will be 6.7 percent overall in the next 23 years. India's economy will attain the size of $34.7 trillion by 2047 with a per capita income of $21,000. The 10-pronged approach also suggests bolstering the renewable energy segment to enhance its installed capacity to 1,500 GW by 2047. The recommendation also includes capacity building for exports -- with a potential 75 products to be focused on to enhance export volumes in global trade.

The ministry came up with the statement to clarify "misinformation" in the healthcare sphere around the recent move to link the CGHS Beneficiary ID to the ABHA number. ABHA is a unique health ID based purely on Aadhaar. The need for ABHA (separate health ID) arose because one cannot save or store an Aadhaar on any system without implementing an Aadhaar vault and other security systems.

The panel will examine measures that can be taken to ensure there is no discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in access to goods and services, and measures that can be taken to ensure that the LGBTQ+ community does not face any threat of violence, harassment or coercion.

In India, the Himalayan and the north-eastern regions account for the highest diversity of Impatiens. The southern arm of the Western Ghats stands second in that respect.

Total funding received by the fintech sector increased by 59 percent in Q1 2024, compared to Q4 2023. Q1 2024 witnessed a total funding of $551 million compared to the $346 million raised in the previous quarter, according to the report by Tracxn, a leading market intelligence platform. The fintech growth as the Indian economy exhibited a robust performance in the previous quarter, with a growth rate of 8.4 percent. According to the IMF, India will become the third-largest economy in the world by 2027, with a GDP of over $5 trillion.

This deal is in line with L&T’s strategy to exit non-core businesses for reducing its exposure to the asset-heavy developmental projects portfolio, thereby enhancing its Return on Equity.

13th April 2024 marks the 105th Anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (also known as the Amritsar Massacre), held on 13 April 1919 in Amritsar, Punjab, British India (now in Punjab). On 13 April 1919, people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh (Amritsar) to protest against the arrest of the two nationalist leaders, Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew. Suddenly, a British military officer, General Dyer, entered the park with his troops. Without even giving a warning to the people to disperse, he ordered his troops to fire at the unarmed crowd for ten minutes and when their ammunition was exhausted, they left. In those ten minutes, according to the estimates of the congress, about a thousand persons were killed and about 2000 wounded. The bullet marks can be still seen on the walls of the Jallianwala Bagh which is now a national memorial.

The ranking was released by London-based higher education analytics firm, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). JNU has been ranked 20th under the subject of Development Studies. As many as 69 Indian universities have made it to the latest ‘QS World University Rankings’ with a total of 424 entries across 55 subjects, a 19.4 per cent jump from the previous year’s 355. With this, India became the second most represented country in Asia after China whose 101 institutions were on the list compiled by global higher education experts QS Quacquarelli Symonds. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad grabbed the next best rank of 22nd in the subject of Business & Management Studies. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore stood the first spot in India, under the Accounting & Finance subject.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) revised its projection for merchandise trade volume to grow increase by 2.6 percent in 2024 and by 3.3 percent in 2025.

The WTO expects demand for traded goods to rebound in 2024 with easing inflationary pressures and improvement in household incomes. In 2023, merchandise trade volumes are estimated to have to contracted by 1.2 percent. Merchandise exports of least developed countries (LDCs) are projected to grow at 2.7 percent this year, down from 4.1 percent last year, before growth accelerates to 4.2 percent in 2025. Meanwhile, imports by LDCs should grow at 6 percent in 2024 and 6.8 percent next year following a 3.5-percent contraction in 2023. The report estimates that global GDP growth at market exchange rates will remain mostly stable over the next two years at 2.6 per cent in 2024 and 2.7 per cent in 2025, after slowing to 2.7 percent in 2023 from 3.1 percent in 2022.

The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) service introduced by India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) enables cash withdrawals from the comfort of home. Through the AePS facility, a bank customer can employ their Aadhaar number as an identity verification tool to access their Aadhaar-enabled bank account. This service allows for basic banking transactions such as balance enquiries, cash withdrawals, and remittances through a business correspondent. For customers to take advantage of the AEPS service, several criteria must be met. Firstly, the customer's bank must participate in AEPS. Secondly, the customer's Aadhaar number must be linked to their bank account. Lastly, transactions are authenticated through biometric data. IPPB, as the acquirer bank, does not impose any limits on AePS transactions for customers of other banks. However, the issuing bank determines these limits based on customer profiles and risk management practices.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) increased its GDP growth projection for India for FY25 to 7%, up from its previous estimate of 6.7%.

The 2024-25 growth estimate is, however, lower than 7.6 percent projected for the 2022-23 fiscal. The ADB had in December 2023 projected the Indian economy to expand 6.7 percent in the 2024-25 fiscal. Growth will be robust despite moderating in FY2024 and FY2025. For the 2025-26 fiscal, the ADB has projected India's growth at 7.2 percent. On balance, growth is forecast to slow to seven per cent in FY2024 but improve to 7.2 percent in FY2025. The ADB's growth forecast for FY25 is in line with the projections made by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Ramann, a 1991 batch of Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA & AS), joined SIDBI for a three-year tenure in April 2021. Mittal earlier worked as a Deputy Managing Director at SIDBI from 2016-2021. He enrolled as an advocate in the Calcutta High Court in 1985, becoming a permanent judge in 2004 and the Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice in 2018.

MoRTH has reported the highest-ever capital expenditure (capex) utilisation of 99.93 percent during the financial year 2023-24. By including private investments, the capex goes up to Rs 3.01 trillion, according to government data. The government has launched a pilot project to provide cashless treatment to road accident victims. Accident victims will be entitled to cashless treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh.

This growth was largely fuelled by the 9.47 lakh new subscribers who onboarded NPS from the non-government sector. Of these 9.47 lakh new subscribers, 8.10 lakh were from the ‘all citizen model ‘ and 1.37 lakh were Corporate employees. The non-government sector—corporates and retail—saw a 41.67 per cent year-on-year growth in NPS assets to ₹ 2.27 lakh Crore as of March 31, 2024. On the other hand, government employees’ assets have recorded 28 per cent year-on-year growth at ₹ 9.05 lakh crore as of March 31. The number of new government employees onboarded NPS in fiscal 2023-24 stood at 7.10 lakh.

The disease is the second leading infectious cause of death globally -- with 1.3 million deaths per year, the same as tuberculosis, a top infectious killer. The report, released at the World Hepatitis Summit, highlights that despite better tools for diagnosis and treatment, and decreasing product prices, testing and treatment coverage rates have stalled. But, reaching the WHO elimination goal by 2030 should still be achievable, if swift actions are taken now. New data from 187 countries show that the estimated number of deaths from viral hepatitis increased from 1.1 million in 2019 to 1.3 million in 2022. Of these, 83% were caused by hepatitis B, and 17% by hepatitis C. Every day, there are 3500 people dying globally due to hepatitis B and C infections.
