India's fiscal deficit rises to Rs 6.42 trillion, 36% of FY2024 target

The central government's fiscal deficit in the first five months of this fiscal year reached 36% of the annual target, up from 32.6% a year ago, as the pace of spending slowed slightly in August compared to the previous month but was still high. Official data released on Friday showed that the situation remains the same as last year. Data released by the Controller General of Accounts on Friday showed India's fiscal deficit in the first five months of the financial year 2023-24 (FY24) stood at Rs 6.42 trillion, 36 per cent of the full-year target of Rs 17.87 trillion.
