India ranks 111th among 125 countries in the 2023 Global Hunger Index (GHI) with a score of 28.7. The Ministry of Women and Child Development in India described these rankings as "flawed" and not reflecting the actual situation in India. In contrast, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka were ranked 102nd, 81st, 69th and 60th respectively. In 2022, India was ranked 107th out of 121 by GHI. The highest levels of regional hunger were found in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, both of which have a GHI score of 27. The Global Hunger Index is a tool to comprehensively measure hunger at regional, national and global levels. The latest report highlights that despite widespread efforts, progress against hunger around the world remains largely stagnant. The head of the World Food Program said the world is facing concurrent and long-term crises that will continue to impact global humanitarian needs, becoming the "new normal" for the humanitarian community.
