President Metzola announced that on September 16 we marked one year since the assassination of Zeina Mahsa Amini in Iran. The European Parliament proudly stands with the brave people and rebels who continue to fight for equality, dignity and freedom in Iran. We stand with those who continue to advocate for women, life and freedom, even from prison. By selecting them as winners of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2023, this House remembers their struggle and continues to honor all those who have paid the ultimate price for freedom." Zina Mahsa Amini was a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman. She was arrested by police in Tehran on 13 September 2022 on charges of ignoring Iran's strict purdah laws and died in a hospital in Tehran three days later after suffering physical abuse in custody. After her death, massive protests led by women began in Iran. Under the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom" they are protesting the hijab law and other discriminatory laws.
