India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted operational licenses to OneWeb and Jio for their satellite-based broadband plans.

Goverment Scheme

Jio Satellite Communications Limited and Eutelsat OneWeb have been awarded the requisite licenses to provide satellite internet services in India. Both companies hold GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) license as well as All India ISP (Internet Service Provider) license. Jio showcased JioSpaceFiber at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023, while Eutelsat OneWeb's solutions were showcased at Airtel's booth. It is clear that Jio Satellite Communications and Eutelsat OneWeb are poised to be the first companies to launch satellite internet services in India with a primary focus on enterprises. Meanwhile, Amazon and Starlink are also in the process of obtaining GMPCS licenses in India. Elon Musk-owned Starlink is already operational in various countries, providing uninterrupted internet services through satellites. ISP (Internet Service Provider) licenses and GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) licenses are granted by regulatory bodies. There are various authorities, each regulating different aspects of communications services.
