The Central Government appointed Vinay M Tonse as the Managing Director of State Bank of India till November 30, 2025. Before his appointment, Tonse was serving as Deputy Managing Director in a PSU bank. The deputy manager of the state-owned bank was recommended by the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) for a senior post in SBI in September. The FSIB is responsible for recommending directors of state-owned banks and financial institutions. The post had become vacant after Swaminathan Janakiraman was appointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He joined State Bank of India in 1988 as a probationary officer. Throughout his tenure, Tonse has worked at various places in India as well as abroad. In his career spanning over 30 years, Tonse has led key functions and projects of State Bank of India. His career includes experience in various aspects of commercial banking such as corporate credit, treasury, retail and international banking.
