According to a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the number of road accidents in India increased by an alarming 12% to over 4.6 lakh in 2022, resulting in 19 deaths every hour. The annual report on 'Road Accidents in India-2022' was published by the ministry on Tuesday. This report presents data/information received from police departments of States/UTs on calendar year basis in standardized formats provided by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under Asia Pacific Road Accident Data (UNESCAP). based on. The report revealed that 53 road accidents occur every hour in the country. There has been a 9.4% increase in fatalities and 15.3% increase in injuries compared to last year. According to the report, for the fourth consecutive year in 2022, fatal road accident victims largely comprised youth in the productive age group. ​
