Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor was elected as the 17th King of Malaysia

International

Malaysia's royal families have elected Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, ruler of the Johor principality, as the country's new king. Iskandar, 64, will assume the throne for five years on January 31, 2024. It is considered almost certain that Ibrahim Iskandar will be elected king. This is because on the basis of the system established among the rulers of the nine princely states of the country, this time it was the turn of the ruler of the princely state of Johor, bordering Singapore, to become king. Ibrahim will succeed Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmed Shah, ruler of the princely state of Pahang. Ahmed Shah has been holding the throne since January 2019, he will remain in office till January 2024. The rulers of the nine principalities of Malaysia hold the post of King of the country by rotation for five years. Malaysia is the only country in the world where there is such a system. Malaysia got independence from Britain in the year 1957. Since then this system of monarchy has remained intact in the country. After being elected king, Sultan Ibrahim said, "This is not a promotion." This is a responsibility that I am ready to accept. The public will always remain supreme.”
