In a rare achievement in the world of traditional Japanese Sumo wrestling, Ukrainian *sekiwake* Aonishiki Arata defeated Mongolian *yokozuna* Hōshōryū Tomokatsu in a playoff to win the Honbasho. Aonishiki, formerly a Grandmaster (GM) in chess before transitioning to Sumo, becomes the first Ukrainian wrestler ever to win a Honbasho tournament. The victory is significant as it highlights the continued internationalization of the ancient Japanese sport and provides a major morale boost for Ukraine. His win at the top-tier tournament will lead to an immediate promotion within the sumo ranks.
