National Service Scheme (NSS) Day is observed every year on 24 September across India to commemorate the launch of the NSS programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). It highlights youth participation in nation-building through voluntary community service.


      - The idea of NSS was first proposed by Major General Jagannath Rao Bhonsle, and the scheme was officially launched on 24 September 1969 by then Union Education Minister Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao in 37 universities across India.

      - The year 1969 was chosen for the launch as it marked the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi (1869โ€“1948), symbolizing youth dedication to selfless service in line with Gandhian values.

      - The NSS is a Central Sector Scheme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), with its core components being students, teachers, and the wider community.

Main Point :-   (i) The NSS motto is โ€œNot Me, But Youโ€, emphasizing the spirit of selflessness, collective responsibility, and community development.

      (ii) The symbol of NSS is derived from the Rath Wheel of the Konark Sun Temple (Odisha), which has 8 bars representing 24 hours of the day, signifying continuous service by youth volunteers.

(iii) NSS Day serves as a reminder of the role of youth in social development, promoting voluntary service, unity, and active involvement in addressing community needs across India.
