Dr. Sima Sami Bahous Reappointed as UN Women Executive Director for Second Term.

In September 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the reappointment of Dr. Sima Sami Bahous of Jordan as the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director (ED) of UN Women for a second term, effective September 11, 2025. Her new term coincides with the launch of UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2026-2029 to accelerate global gender equality.


      - Dr. Sima Bahous has been reappointed as UN Women’s Executive Director for a second term, following her first appointment on September 30, 2021, making her the third leader of the organization.

      - Her reappointment aligns with the rollout of UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2026-2029, which prioritizes strengthening women’s empowerment and advancing gender equality worldwide.

     

Main Point :-   (i) During her initial tenure, she mainstreamed gender equality into global policies, ensuring women’s issues remained central to peace, security, and sustainable development discussions.

      (ii) Dr. Bahous earlier served as Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York and held senior positions including Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at UNDP (2012–2016).

(iii) She worked as Assistant Secretary-General and Head of Social Development at the League of Arab States (2008–2012), President of Jordan’s Higher Media Council (2005–2008), and Adviser to King Abdullah II (2003–2005).
