UN Observes 3rd International Day for Interventional Cardiology on 16th September 2025

The UN observes the International Day for Interventional Cardiology on 16th September to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and promote minimally invasive heart treatments. 2025 marks its 3rd observance.

      - UNGA resolution A/RES/76/302 (2nd September 2022) declared 16th September as the International Day for Interventional Cardiology, inviting WHO support.

      - The day was first observed on 16th September 2023 to promote cardiovascular health and early treatment options.

Main Point :-   (i) The date commemorates the first coronary angioplasty in 1977 by Dr. Andreas Roland Grüntzig at University Hospital Zürich, Switzerland. It is a cardiology branch using minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures, offering faster recovery than open-heart surgery.

      (ii) Includes angioplasty, stenting, and valve repairs; treats Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), structural heart disorders, and Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD).

(iii) CVDs caused 17.9 million deaths in 2019 (32% of global deaths), mostly in low- and middle-income countries. Major risks: diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking.
