Veteran CPI Leader and Former MP Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy Passed Away at 83.

Obituary

On 22nd August 2025, veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passed away at the age of 83 in Hyderabad, Telangana. Born on 25th March 1942 in Kondravpally village, Mahbubnagar district of the then Hyderabad State (now Telangana), he was widely respected for his decades-long political and social contributions.


      - Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy began his public life as a student activist, where he rose to prominence by being elected as the All India President of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) in 1970. His early leadership highlighted his commitment to youth and educational reforms, paving the way for his entry into mainstream politics.

      - In his parliamentary career, Sudhakar Reddy represented Nalgonda constituency of Telangana as a CPI MP in both 1998 and 2004. During this period, he actively championed labor rights and welfare, gaining recognition for voicing the needs of marginalized communities in Parliament.

     

Main Point :-   (i) As chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, he played a crucial role in advocating for social security benefits, workplace safety, and improved working conditions for Indian workers. His tenure was marked by consistent efforts to align labor policies with the interests of employees across both organized and unorganized sectors.

      (ii) Sudhakar Reddy’s leadership within the CPI became most prominent when he was elected as the General Secretary of the party in 2012. He was re-elected twice, in 2015 at Puducherry and in 2018 at Kollam, Kerala, underscoring his influence and acceptance within the party’s national framework.

(iii) Although his leadership term was scheduled to continue till 2021, Sudhakar Reddy voluntarily stepped down in 2019 due to health considerations. His departure marked the end of an era for CPI, but his political journey remains an enduring example of dedication towards workers’ rights, youth empowerment, and socialist values.
