Hindustan Zinc Becomes First Indian Company to Join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).

In August 2025, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, made history by becoming the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). Headquartered in London, United Kingdom (UK), ICMM is a leading global industry body that promotes sustainable development, ethical practices, and environmental responsibility in the mining and metals sector.


      - Hindustan Zinc’s induction into ICMM is a landmark moment for India’s mining industry, as it brings the country into a select group of 25 global mining and metal companies shaping international mining standards. This is ICMM’s first new member addition since Swedish company Boliden joined in 2021, highlighting the exclusivity of the group.

      - ICMM, established in 2001, works to improve environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance across the mining value chain. Members commit to responsible mining practices, transparency in operations, protection of biodiversity, and meaningful engagement with local communities.

      - The selection process for ICMM membership is rigorous. Hindustan Zinc underwent a detailed review by the ICMM’s Independent Expert Review Panel (IERP), which assessed its compliance with sustainable mining frameworks, ethical governance structures, safety standards, and climate resilience initiatives before granting approval.

Main Point :-   (i) As part of its membership obligations, HZL will now work towards meeting 40 ICMM Performance Expectations covering environmental stewardship, community development, occupational safety, climate change mitigation, and corporate governance.

      (ii) This move positions Hindustan Zinc as a key representative for India in the global conversation on sustainable and responsible mining.
