In early July 2025, Cyprus-based Interorient Navigation Co. Ltd. and Denmark’s Danship & Partners Ltd announced a landmark foreign direct investment of ₹10,000 crore into India’s shipping sector. This marks the largest-ever FDI in Indian maritime history since the sector opened to 100% foreign investment in 2005.

- The massive investment follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic state visit to Cyprus on 15 June 2025, where maritime cooperation formed a key agenda with President Nikos Christodoulides. Discussions during the visit laid the groundwork for this strategic collaboration.

(i) Under the terms of the agreement, all vessels acquired under this project will be registered under the Indian flag, significantly boosting India’s national shipping tonnage.
