TN Govt, HMIL & IIT Madras Team Up to Launch Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre in Chennai.

In early July 2025, the Government of Tamil Nadu, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) officially unveiled plans for the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre—a cutting-edge research hub in Thaiyur, Chennai, dedicated to advancing green hydrogen technology and its applications across industry and mobility.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - Spread across 65,000 sq ft on the IIT Madras Discovery Satellite Campus, the centre is backed by a ₹100 crore investment from HMIL and its CSR arm, the Hyundai Motor India Foundation.
  • - Tamil Nadu’s guidance office and the state government are also supporting the project, which is projected to be operational by 2026.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The centre will house advanced computational and experimental laboratories focused on electrolyser and fuel cell development, digital twin simulations, custom test rigs, and containerised pilot demonstrators. The aim is to catalyse scalable, indigenous hydrogen solutions for the mobility and power sectors.
  • (ii) Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa, HMIL MD Unsoo Kim, and IIT Madras Director Prof V. Kamakoti highlighted that the centre underpins the Make in India initiative, supports Tamil Nadu’s role as an R&D hub, and aligns with the country’s goals of net-zero by 2070 and energy independence by 2047, while nurturing India’s hydrogen workforce.
