AP Launches AI-based SMoSS Initiative to Combat Mosquito-borne Diseases Across Six Cities.

In July 2025, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) launched the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), becoming the first Indian state to adopt an AI-integrated surveillance and control network to tackle mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. The project uses a combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) tools to provide real-time data for proactive mosquito control.

  • - The SMoSS initiative is being implemented by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department of Andhra Pradesh in 66 locations across six municipal corporations.
  • - These include major urban areas like Greater Visakhapatnam (16 locations), Vijayawada (28), Nellore (7), Kurnool (6), Rajamahendravaram (5), and Kakinada (4), making it one of the largest mosquito surveillance initiatives in the country.
  • - The project aims to deploy AI-powered smart mosquito sensors, heat maps, automated traps, and drone-based larvicide spraying to monitor and reduce mosquito populations effectively. IoT-connected devices will be used to capture and transmit surveillance data to a central control system.
