As per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) latest data released on June 30, 2025, ₹2,000 denomination notes worth ₹6,099 crore are still circulating in the economy. This remaining amount accounts for just 1.71% of the total value of ₹2,000 notes that were in circulation when the RBI announced their withdrawal on May 19, 2023.

  • - The RBI also confirmed that 98.29% of the total ₹2,000 notes issued—valued at around ₹3.56 lakh crore—have already been returned by the public through banks and other official channels.
  • - Despite their withdrawal on May 19, 2023, these notes remain legal tender. The RBI allowed deposit or exchange at bank branches until October 7, 2023, and continues to accept them at its 19 Issue Offices.
  • - To improve accessibility, people may also mail ₹2,000 notes via India Post to RBI offices, with amounts credited directly to bank accounts. This service targets individuals in remote or rural areas.
