8th Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction Convened in Switzerland to Strengthen Climate Resilience.

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2025 was organized by the United Nations (UN) Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 2 to 6, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.


      - The event was hosted by the Government of Switzerland and co-chaired by Switzerland and UNDRR.

      - Theme of the 8th Session of GPDRR (2025): "Every Day Counts: Act for Resilience Today" — emphasizing the urgency to take bold, proactive measures to protect communities and build a more resilient, sustainable future.

      - The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2006 and is organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) every two to three years. Its primary objective is to assess global progress on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), facilitate knowledge sharing, and guide the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030). Notably, the 7th session of GPDRR was held in Bali, Indonesia.

Main Point :-   (i) On 5 June 2025, Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, represented India at the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group Roundtable held on the sidelines of the GPDRR 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. He emphasized India’s strong DRR financing framework, with investments exceeding USD 28 billion, and advocated for a global facility to support funding, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing in disaster management.

      (ii) During the event, Dr. P.K. Mishra engaged in discussions with Stine Renate Haheim, Norway’s Deputy Minister for International Development, underlining the significance of global collaboration in enhancing DRR strategies. He also stressed the G20’s pivotal role in promoting global disaster resilience by leveraging both its economic strength and developmental priorities.

(iii) On 6 June 2025, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, “Cyclone Man of India” and DG of IMD, received the UN Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction (individual category). The theme was “Connecting Science to People”, promoting innovation for disaster resilience. Other winners included Prof. Harkunti Pertiwi Rahayu (Indonesia) and GNDR (UK) in the organizational category.
