On June 4, 2025, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), was elected as the 14th President of South Korea following a snap presidential election held on June 3.
- Lee won the presidency with 49.42% of the vote, defeating conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, who garnered 41.15%. Voter turnout was notably high at 79.38%—the highest since 1997—reflecting strong public engagement after months of political turbulence.
- The early election was triggered by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who faced removal from office following his brief and controversial imposition of martial law.
Main Point :- (i) Lee Jae-myung began his career as a human rights and labor lawyer, actively advocating for workers' rights and social justice before entering politics in 2005.
(ii) He served as the Mayor of Seongnam from 2010 and later as the Governor of Gyeonggi Province from 2018 to 2021, gaining national recognition for his leadership.
(iii) A seasoned political figure, Lee contested the presidential elections in 2017 and narrowly lost to Yoon Suk Yeol in 2022. From 2022 to 2025, he served as a Member of the National Assembly for the Gyeyang B constituency and led the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK).
