UNDP Joins Global Network to Support Countries in Tackling Climate Change.

In April 2025, the New York (United States of America, USA)-based United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently joined the Santiago Network, an international initiative specifically developed to support vulnerable countries and communities in addressing the irreversible impacts of loss and damage caused by climate change.

  • - The term 'loss and damage' refers to the harmful effects of climate change that cannot be avoided or adapted to.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) A 2023 study showed that between 2000 and 2019, the world suffered at least USD 2.8 trillion in climate-related damages, amounting to nearly USD 16 million every hour.
  • (ii) Vulnerable countries, despite being least responsible for global greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), are most affected by climate change. For instance, the 2022 floods in Pakistan impacted 33 million people and caused economic damages close to USD 30 billion.
  • (iii) The Santiago Network was established in 2019 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to bring together organizations, networks, and experts to support the implementation of solutions that avert, minimize, and address loss and damage due to climate change. Its secretariat is co-hosted by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Geneva, Switzerland.
