The United Nations (UN) Chinese Language Day is annually observed across the globe on April 20 to promote multilingualism, cultural diversity, and the equal use of the six official UN languages.

  • (i) Established in 2010 by the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) (formerly the Department of Public Information), the day was initiated to celebrate the richness of Chinese heritage and to encourage its broader use across all UN duty stations.
  • (ii) The first Chinese Language Day was observed on 12 November 2010. However, from 2011 onward, the celebration is held annually on April 20, to coincide with Guyu, a solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, and to honour Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese characters.
