In April 2025, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), based in Kozhikode (Kerala), developed a new light-coloured turmeric variety named 'IISR Surya'. This new variety features a light-coloured rhizome designed to meet the specific requirements of the modern powdering (masala) industry.
