Mission Amrit Sarovar Revives Over 68000 Water Bodies Across India Through Government Initiative.

The Mission Amrit Sarovar, a flagship initiative under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, was launched on 24th April 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the National Panchayati Raj Day celebrations at Palli Gram Panchayat, Samba District, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The mission aims to construct or rejuvenate at least 75 Amrit Sarovars (ponds) in each district across India to restore traditional water bodies and promote water conservation.
  • - Each Amrit Sarovar is developed to cover a minimum pondage area of 1 acre (0.4 hectares) and is capable of holding approximately 10,000 cubic meters (m³) of water.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Mission Amrit Sarovar adopts a "Whole of Government" approach, involving coordination between multiple ministries and departments for seamless execution. The mission is further supported by the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N) for geospatial monitoring.
  • (ii) As of March 2025, more than 68,000 Sarovars have been constructed or rejuvenated, out of which 46,000 were developed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
  • (iii) The recharge capacity from tanks, ponds, and water conservation structures has significantly increased from 13.98 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM) in 2017 to 25.34 BCM in 2024, showcasing substantial progress in groundwater replenishment.
