  • - The main objective of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 is to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, to address existing challenges in the regulation and management of waqf properties across India.

  • (i) Waqf refers to properties permanently dedicated for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law, and their use or sale for any other purpose is strictly prohibited. Once dedicated, the property is considered to be held in the name of Allah.
  • (ii) A waqf is permanent and irrevocable—once a property becomes waqf, it cannot be taken back, reclaimed, or redirected from its intended religious or charitable purpose.
  • (iii) India holds the largest waqf property base in the world. The Waqf Board is also the third-largest landowner in the country, after the Indian Armed Forces and the Indian Railways.
