Gujarat's Famous ‘Amalsad Chikoo’ Recently Awarded GI Tag for Its Unique Agricultural Identity.

In April 2025, "Amalsad Chikoo" (sapodilla), a horticultural fruit from South Gujarat, was recently awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, becoming the first agricultural product from the region to achieve this recognition.

🎯 Key Highlights:

- The GI tag was granted by the Chennai (Tamil Nadu)-based GI Registry, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I).
- The GI tag was awarded to the Valsad Navsari Jilla Fal Ane Shakhbhaji Sahakari Sangh Limited (Gujarat) following a joint application submitted by the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST), Gandhinagar and Navsari Agricultural University (NAU), Navsari.
- It is the 3rd fruit from Gujarat to receive the GI tag, after the Gir Kesar Mango and Kutchhi Kharek (date).

(i) Amalsad Chikoo, named after Amalsad village in Navsari district, is known for its remarkable sweetness, smooth texture, and extended shelf life. It is cultivated using traditional horticultural practices passed down for generations.
(ii) The GI-tagged region includes 51 villages in Gandevi Taluka, 6 in Jalalpore Taluka, and 30 in Navsari Taluka, collectively producing 30% of Gujarat’s chikoo, while Gujarat itself contributes 98% of India’s chikoo exports.
(iii) Amalsad Chikoo’s premium quality and extended shelf life make it ideal for both domestic and global markets. The recently granted GI tag is expected to boost exports to the UAE, UK, and Bahrain, while also promoting traditional farming practices and supporting local farmers’ livelihoods in Gujarat.
