6 More Products from Tamil Nadu Recently Receive GI Tag, Raising State’s Total to 69.

In April 2025, the Geographical Indication (GI) Registry, based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and operating under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), recently granted GI tags to six additional products from Tamil Nadu.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - These include the well-known Puliyankudi Acid Lime, Panruti Cashew, and Virudhunagar Samba Vathal (dried red chillies), among others.
  • - With this recognition, the total number of GI-tagged products from Tamil Nadu has increased to 69, further strengthening its position as the second-highest Indian state in terms of Geographical Indication-certified products.
  • - Tamil Nadu now follows Uttar Pradesh (UP), which currently holds the top spot with 79 GI-certified products.

  • (i) The GI Registry has also recently awarded GI certificates to 8 additional traditional products from Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), along with one product each from Telangana, Assam, and Kerala.
  • (ii) With these additions, the total number of GI-registered crafts from the Kashmir region has risen to 15, out of which 7 crafts have already received official GI certification.
