Paradip Port Retains Top Position in Cargo Handling Among Major Ports in FY25.

According to provisional estimates released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA), Odisha-based Paradip Port Authority (PPA), formerly known as Paradip Port Trust, has retained its position as the top cargo-handling major port in India for the Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • PPA handled 150.41 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of cargo, marking a 3.5% increase compared to 145.4 MMT handled in FY24. With this, it has joined the exclusive 150 MMT club among Indian ports.
  • It was closely followed by Deendayal Port (Kandla, Gujarat), which witnessed a 13% increase, handling 150.15 MMT of cargo in FY25, up from 132 MMT in FY24. Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, recorded 7.4% growth, reaching 86 MMT cargo volume in FY25.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Overall, the data shows that most of the 12 major Indian ports recorded cargo traffic growth of 4.35%, reaching a total of 855 MMT in FY25, compared to 819.30 MMT in FY24.
  • (ii) Mundra Port (Mumbai, Maharashtra), India’s largest commercial port operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), made history by becoming the first Indian port to cross 200 MMT of cargo handling. It recorded 200.7 MMT in FY25, showing an 11.5% rise from 180 MMT in FY24.
  • (iii) Indian Ports Association (IPA) Established in1966 under the Societies Registration Act, the Indian Ports Association (IPA) serves as a statutory body dedicated to promoting the coordinated growth and modernization of India’s major ports. It functions under the supervisory authority of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), supporting policy formulation, development strategies, and performance improvement across the sector.
