In March 2025, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), based in Gland (Switzerland), released its first Green Status Assessment for the Lion (scientific name: Panthera leo). The report labeled the lion as 'largely depleted,' while it continues to be listed as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List.

🎯 Key Highlights:

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The IUCN first introduced the 'green status' in a paper published in the journal Conservation Biology in July 2021. The green status was developed to give a full conservation picture of a species.
