Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Unveils India's First Indigenous Automated BMWTP 'Srjanam' at AIIMS, New Delhi.

In February 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), launched India’s first Indigenous Automated Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Plant (BMWTP) named "Srjanam" at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS New Delhi), in Delhi.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - It was developed by Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala)-based Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) - National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST).
  • - This initiative marks a major step forward in the sustainable handling of biomedical waste. It replaces costly and energy-intensive incinerators, while also imparting a pleasant fragrance to otherwise foul-smelling toxic waste.
  • - Dr. N. Kalaiselvi (Director General, DG, CSIR), Dr. M. Srinivas (Director, AIIMS New Delhi), Dr. V. K. Paul (Member, NITI Aayog), Dr. Rajiv Bahl (Secretary, Department of Health Research, DHR, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, MoH&FW, and DG, Indian Council of Medical Research, ICMR), and Tanmay Kumar (Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, MoEFCC) were also present at the event.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The Automated Biomedical Waste Treatment Rig can sanitize harmful biomedical waste like blood, urine, sputum, and lab disposables without relying on costly and energy-intensive incinerators.
  • (ii) With a daily capacity of 400 kg, it can initially process 10 kg of degradable medical waste per day, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional burning methods.
  • (iii) The initiative supports the government's vision of "Viksit Bharat" by 2047, positioning India as a global leader in environmental and healthcare solutions.
