National Epilepsy Day is celebrated every year on 17 November in India to raise awareness about epilepsy and its impact on individuals, families and society. Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by abnormal brain activity or temporary changes in the electrical functioning of the brain. The cause may cause seizures. This day was first celebrated by the Epilepsy Foundation of India and was founded by Dr. Nirmal Surya. The aim of the day was to help those in need who are not able to get treatment for this disease and also to break the myths related to epilepsy, create awareness about the symptoms and management of the disease. According to WHO, about 50 million people are affected by epilepsy worldwide and India accounts for about 10-20 percent (5-10 million) of the global burden of epilepsy. About 70 percent of people with epilepsy are able to successfully manage seizures with medication and some types of surgery. Seizures in one part of the brain are called focal seizures and are usually accompanied by loss of consciousness, while generalized seizures In the case of AD, all areas of the brain are involved. ​
