NTPC and Indian Army Collaborate for Round-the-Clock Green Hydrogen Power Supply.

New Delhi (Delhi)-based National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has collaborated with the Indian Army (IA) to set up a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid at Chushul in Leh district of the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The initiative is focused on delivering a round-the-clock, stable power supply using green hydrogen technology to off-grid Army locations.
  • - The Solar Hydrogen Microgrid, developed by NTPC, will provide 200 kilowatts (kW) of uninterrupted power throughout the year, replacing existing diesel generators in off-grid Army areas.
  • - The microgrid is engineered to withstand extreme winter temperatures, reaching as low as -30°C, and will operate at an altitude of 4,400 meters, ensuring energy security for soldiers in challenging terrains.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), virtually inaugurated the project, with senior officials from MoD, the IA, and NTPC in attendance.
  • (ii) NTPC will be responsible for maintaining the project for 25 years, guaranteeing consistent and reliable power in strategically important regions.
  • (iii) NTPC is targeting a Renewable Energy (RE) capacity of 60 gigawatts (GW) by 2032.
