According to the latest report released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Institute for Statistics (UIS) on World Education Statistics, 2024, India has allocated nearly 4.1-4.6% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to education between 2015 and 2024.

  • - The report states that India's government spending on education has ranged between 13.5% and 17.2% from 2015 to 2024.
  • - The report also points out that globally, the average public expenditure on education has declined since 2010, from 13.2% in 2010 to 12.5% in 2020, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • (i) The report highlighted that India's expenditure on education is higher than that of countries like Japan and China when compared to the overall Asia region.
  • (ii) According to UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report 2024, since the adoption of the UN SDG on education in 2015, over 110 million children and youth have enrolled in school.
  • (iii) Despite this progress, the out-of-school population has decreased by only 1% during the same period, with 251 million children and youth still not attending school.
