GE Aerospace's LM2500 Engine to Power Indian Navy's Next-Generation Missile Vessels.

General Electric (GE) Aerospace, based in the United States of America (USA), has selected its LM2500 marine gas turbine engines, engineered for reliability and performance, to power the Indian Navy's (IN) Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV), which are being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi (Kerala).

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - GE will provide six kits of LM2500 engines, which will be assembled and tested by the Industrial and Marine Gas Turbine Division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore (Karnataka).
  • - HAL previously assembled and tested LM2500 turbines for the IN’s P17 and P17A frigates and the Vikrant aircraft carrier.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) This decision comes more than a year after CSL signed a contract worth Rs. 9,805 crore to build six NGMVs for the Indian Navy.
  • (ii) The delivery of the vessels is expected to begin in March 2027, as the Indian Navy aims to safeguard the country's maritime interests in the strategically contested Indo-Pacific region, especially against aggressive Chinese vessels.
  • (iii) The NGMV is a new design for the Indian Navy, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 35 knots, and is equipped with an array of advanced anti-surface weapons.
