According to the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2024: Poverty amid Conflict, 1.1 billion (18.3%) out of 6.1 billion people across 112 countries live in acute multidimensional poverty.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - A staggering 455 million (40%) of the world's poor reside in countries experiencing war, fragility, and/or low peacefulness, hindering and even reversing progress made in poverty reduction.
  • - As per the report, India, with 234 million people, has the largest number of people living in poverty, followed by Pakistan (93 million), Ethiopia (86 million), Nigeria (74 million), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) (66 million).

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The report was jointly released by the Human Development Report Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) based at the University of Oxford on 17th October 2024, which is observed annually as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
  • (ii) According to the report, over half of the 1.1 billion poor people, i.e., 584 million, are children under the age of 18. Globally, approximately 28% of children live in poverty compared with 13.5% of adults.
