The Assam government and ADB have partnered for a project worth ₹796 crore to restore wetlands.

The Assam government, along with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has launched a project called 'Sustainable Wetland and Integrated Fisheries Transformation (SWIFT)' with a budget of ₹796.88 crore. This project aims to restore 129 wetlands, locally known as beels, covering an area of 3,800 hectares.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The initiative focuses on enhancing flood mitigation, improving water management, and supporting local fisheries.
  • - The Assam State Application Centre (ASSAC) has geo-mapped the wetlands involved in the project.
  • - The project involves dredging and deepening river channels to improve water flow, desilting marginal areas to enhance water retention, and constructing water pools and retaining structures for sustainable water storage and increased fish production.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The project funding will be split as follows: 80% from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and 20% from the State Government.
  • (ii) 2. Initially, 190 beels were identified for restoration. After using ADB's Screening Matrix for evaluation, 129 beels were selected based on their potential for ecological recovery.
  • (iii) M/s Electroveen Engineering Private Limited from New Delhi has already submitted the feasibility study report and the first draft of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
