The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved three pilot projects for green hydrogen in the steel sector.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) to use green hydrogen in steel production. The Government of India (GoI) has allocated ₹347 crore to support these projects, which are expected to start operating within the next three years.

- These initiatives mark an important step towards cleaner steel-making technologies, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the industry.
- Matrix Gas and Renewables Limited, based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is leading a consortium with Gensol Engineering Ltd, IIT Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB to develop a pilot project with a capacity of 50 tons per day (TPD).
- Simplex Castings Limited, based in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, is leading a consortium that includes BSBK Private Limited, Ten Eight Investment, and IIT Bhilai. Together, they are developing a pilot project with a capacity of 40 tons per day (TPD).

(i) The NGHM was launched on January 4, 2023, with a total budget of ₹19,744 crore.
(ii) Key Components of the Projects: Developing a process to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen in vertical shaft furnaces, along with injecting hydrogen into DRI production units.
(iii) Hydrogen Use in Blast Furnaces: Reducing coal and coke consumption by injecting hydrogen into blast furnaces.
