Eight products from Assam's Bodo Tribe have been granted GI tag.

The Geographical Indications (GI) Registry, located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and operating under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) within the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoCI), has officially granted the GI tag to eight products originating from Assam.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The eight newly recognized GI products are: Jou Gwran, Maibra Jou Bidwi, Jou Gishi, Napham (fermented fish), Ondla/Onla, Gwkha Gwkhwi, Narzi, and Aronai.
  • - These products include traditional food items and distinctive varieties of rice beer, showcasing the rich cultural practices and culinary heritage of the Bodo Tribe of Assam.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The Bodo Traditional Brewers Association applied for Geographical Indication tags for three rice beer variants. The first, ‘Bodo Jou Gwran,’ has the highest alcohol content (about 16.11%) among Bodo rice beers.
  • (ii) The second, ‘Maibra Jou Bidwi’ (locally ‘Maibra Jwu Bidwi’), is valued and often served as a welcome drink by many Bodo tribes.
