International Day for the Abolition of Slavery This day is observed on 2 December to highlight the importance of eliminating contemporary forms of slavery including trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage etc.

Important Days

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 2 December 1986. On this day, organizations, governments and individuals come together to fight against the condemnable practice of slavery in any form in the society. This day also reminds us of the dark past of racism, slavery and social oppression. The celebration recognizes the efforts of all those who continue to fight against modern manifestations of slavery such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, the most serious forms of child labour, forced marriage and the recruitment of children into the armed forces. The theme of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery 2023 is 'Fighting the legacy of racism of slavery through transformative education' and emphasizes the continuing effects of the legacy of racism of the transatlantic slave trade. Such prejudices and biases continue to contribute to harmful beliefs and perceptions that continue to affect people around the world, especially those of African descent. This year's theme aims to end all forms of slavery through education.
