India-born UK-based author Nandini Das wins British Academy Book Award 2023 for Counting India

Awards

Nandini Das of the University of Oxford was announced in London overnight as the winner of the 2023 British Academy Book Prize for Cultural Understanding for her Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire. Das received a prize of £25,000 (US$30,322) for his perspective on the arrival of the first English ambassador to India in the 17th century, which competition organizers say “takes us beyond the Eurocentric narrative with an even-handed, exciting story." Through its beautiful writing and exceptional research, the jury was drawn to the contrast between a poor, insecure Britain and the prosperous, confident Mughal Empire and the often amusing, sometimes bizarre exchanges between their various representatives Was.
