The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $500 million loan to enhance the quality and affordability of tertiary health care and medical education in Maharashtra. This program will initiate important policy reforms to promote tertiary health services and expand medical education, especially in deprived areas. The Maharashtra Tertiary Care and Medical Education Sector Development Program, financed by the ADB loan, aims to build tertiary care hospitals as well as four new medical colleges with features that will be climate and disaster resilient, gender-sensitive, and socially inclusive . The program also plans to increase bed capacity in hospitals in the state and recruit at least 500 doctors for these new institutions. According to a statement, ADB's contribution includes a favorable policy to attract and retain medical professionals through performance incentives, a new talent management policy and India's inaugural state-led Centers of Excellence in health care and medical education.
