The World Health Organization (WHO)'s 2023 Global TB Report found that 7.5 million people worldwide in 2022 – the highest number recorded since the disease began in 1995 – will be diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB). 192 The report, which presents data from countries and territories, said good recoveries have led to substantial increases in access and provision of health services in many countries. Some progress has been made in the development of new TB diagnostics, drugs, and vaccines. The percentage of TB patients and their families facing total catastrophic costs is much less than about 50. WHO's new goals include reaching TB prevention and care services to 90 percent of those in need; Using WHO-recommended rapid tests as the first method of diagnosing TB; Providing health and social benefit packages to all people with TB; ensuring availability of at least one new TB vaccine that is safe and effective; and closing the funding gap for TB implementation and research by 2027.
