World-renowned author Salman Rushdie has been honored with the first 'Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award' by the Vaclav Havel Centre. This was Rushdie's first public appearance since he was stabbed during a literary festival in New York in August 2022. He was forced into hiding following Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's 1989 order against 'Verses'. Describing Havel as a hero who balanced artistry with activism, Rushdie expressed his deep honor at receiving the award in Havel's name. The ceremony, hosted by veteran CBS journalist Leslie Stahl, took place at the Havel Center, formerly known as the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation. Established in 2012 to perpetuate Havel's legacy, the center focuses on advocating for human rights and free expression. The event featured a number of writers and diplomats, highlighting individuals dedicated to the protection of freedom of expression and human rights in the face of adversity.
