Renowned ophthalmologist and founder of Shankar Nethralaya Eye Hospital in Chennai, Dr. Sengamedu Srinivas Badrinath has passed away at the age of 83.

Ophthalmologist Dr Sengamedu Srinivas Badrinath, who waged a war against preventable blindness and helped thousands of people see the light, died in Chennai due to age-related ailments. Dr. Badrinath was 83 years old. He is survived by his wife Vasanti Badrinath and sons Sheshu Badrinath and Anant Badrinath. Dr. Badrinath Shankar was synonymous with Nethralaya, the eye care hospital he built to provide high-quality treatment not only to politicians, businessmen, musicians and actors but also to the underprivileged. Dr Badrinath, a vitreoretinal surgeon and Padma Bhushan and BC Roy awardee, was determined. With meager resources and missionary zeal, he transformed a 17-bed hospital in an old bungalow on College Road in Nungambakkam into a nationally reputed institution providing quality health care and research to find solutions to eye problems in the country. Does. Dr. Badrinath, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, stopped operating a few years ago and spends his time reading books and watching television in his apartment in Mandaveli. ​
