The Indira Gandhi Award for Peace, Disarmament and Development was jointly presented to the Indian Medical Association and the Indian Trained Nurses Association as representatives of the Covid warriors in the country. Addressing the award ceremony, Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that this award has been given to every doctor, nurse, paramedic and worker for their selfless service, unwavering dedication and perseverance in the face of adversity. The award aims to promote the issues that Indiraji herself advocated and worked for during her astonishing career. Praising the role of doctors, paramedics and others, he said, "They were battling a disease that nothing was known about, a virus that did not respect borders, that was threatening both patients and doctors. Was putting me in danger." Paramedics and even those who protected, supplied and managed our hospitals. Recalling the sacrifices of the medical community, he pointed out that "at great cost to himself and his family, the medical community worked unprecedented hours without the slightest consideration for their welfare." ​
